EDF final bill help!

Seen a lot of posts on here dying EDF have tried to over charge them etc. Would like some help re my bill please!

I am a young and new renter. I starting renting my flat in December 2015, I found lots of bills for the occupant so called edf to change name over to me and stop receiving bills for ex occupant. I advised edf I would be moving to 'flow energy' in a few weeks as soon as the switch was finalised.
I have recently been in hospital but found yesterday when I got home I have a couple of bills they have sent over the last few weeks. They have marked my final bill (for less than 3 weeks of electricity) as £85.. which seems a lot to me!!!! More than can I afford to be throwing around! I am an economy 7 boiler, but they have charged most of the charges on a 18.67p kWh rate. Is this correct or are they scamming me?

In addition to this, another bill, dated a week or 2 after the other has added an additional £45 listing them only as "charges for this period" - with no explanation to what these charges are for?

I have already had trouble with edf and their poor service as when I moved in and gave them correct meter readings (which I have photos of) they told me they were incorrect readings and refused to take them! Flow energy have taken them and said edf must have had incorrect ones from last resident at the address.

Could my charges be because the meter readings on the bill are estimates?

I am a young female living alone with very poor knowledge of energy rates/readings/billing etc. Any help would be very much appreciated! I feel I am being taken for a mug by edf with such high bills! Help in layman's terms please!

Much appreciated!

Note: My partner does stay over a lot so I do use more energy than most living alone.

Did you provide reads when you first phoned EDF and then when your new supplier took over and are these reflected on your bill?

Does the bill state the reads are estimated?
  • Hi thanks for your reply.

As I said above, I supplied reads but the edf call centre employee rejected them and said they were incorrect when compared to previous tenants reads. I ensured her they were correct and that I have photos and she refused to take them. It states on the bill it is estimates.

    Thanks

You now start a complaint. Their web page will detail the complaint procedure. https://www.edfenergy.com/for-home/help-support/making-complaint
  • What I am querying is whether they have overcharged or if any experts can tell me what they have done wrong?

I can't complain if I don't understand what has gone on

That can only be decided with actual meter reads and dates then calculating what the bill should be.

Your complaint is that they have supplied an incorrect bill because it is based on an estimated initial reading. You've already said that they refused to accept your accurate initial reading and you have photographic proof of that, so I think you have a strong case.

By the way, is the flat rental managed by an agency? If so, wouldn't they have had some involvement in ensuring the readings were taken at the end/beginning of each tennancy?

Outgoing tenants frequently provide end reads weeks before they leave, trying to "nick a few quid "How can any call centre jockey trust anyones readings without verification and state they are true. The time to check the meter is 10 seconds before you shut the front door for the last time.
Incomers are just as bad. They will also do the same and log a start read after a week or two.Anyone who contests smart meters as a bad idea is a complete idiot, they are not aware of all the implications of a meter which knows the time and date of usage. This sort of thing is just one of them.
There are also problems with electric "dial " meters which will certainly baffle many and will submit a completely wrong start or end read.
