Replacement gas cooker on home insurance?

Options
Tonight our carbon monoxide alarm went off just after the gas cooker had been used. The flame had started burning yellow instead of blue so think there's an issue with the cooker.

Would it be something you can claim on the household insurance for?

Thanks

  • For the cooker - no is it outside its warranty?

If it blows up you might be able to claim on your contents.

    Get it checked out ASAP.

If it's releasing carbon monoxide they might not live long enough to - seriously. It should not be used at all until it has been repaired.

You need to be worrying about alarm and yellow flame not getting a new cooker, get a Gas safe engineer in asap.

Edit.... In fact I think the advice given is.....On hearing the alarm turn off gas appliances, leave the property and call an engineer out.
  • its all been turned off, property well ventilated and safe

now cooker is the issue, as have three kids in the house to feed :)

cooker is old and well past warranty

Home insurance won't cover something which just stops working - it would need to be claimed under accidental damage cover (and for that there would need to be a one off identifiable incident of accidental damage causing the problem). It will specifically exclude breakdown or wear and tear

Then you need to call someone in to fix it; it probably won't need much doing, gas cookers (esp old ones) are pretty simple devices.
  • I'm a household claims handler - we wouldn't cover it on the basis that this sounds like mechanical breakdown, not accidental damage.
