Kindle problem: out of storage...

I have a problem with my kindle. It says it has run out of storage and consequently, won't even let me access the internet ("wi-fi has been disabled"). However, there is nothing else I can delete. All my content is in the 'cloud'.
When I click on 'Manage Storage', I have been through all the categories, but there is nothing more to delete. I am presuming that when it gives a value, i.e, 14.2MB, that means the amount of storage taken up by those items? However, whilst it gives a value for 'docs', there are no docs, or at least not that show up when I click on that option.
Any tips/hints/advice gratefully received. I am technologically backwards, so please be kind....especially if I've missed anything obvious

What type of kindle is it? (Normal, paperwhite, fire etc?)
Without knowing more, you could try a full power cycle, open the kindle, and hold down the power button for about 10 seconds, this will turn it totally off, not just sleep, leave it for a few seconds then hold the button for a few seconds to turn it on again.

Why don't you connect it to the laptop/desktop via cable and see what's taking up the memory? Just open it as you do any other device in my computer, It may be that something lurking in there ant taking up the memory. Other than that a factory reset?0

Does it mean your cloud storage has been exceeded? Is there a limit?0

pmmarin86 - It's a normal kindle, I've had it for about two and a half years. I tried the power cycle but nothing changed.
KRDmum - I could try connecting it to a laptop, though the only one I have at the moment is a Chromebook, so not sure if that will work (like I said, not good with technology!) Will try later. How would I do a factory reset?
Le_Kirk - There may well be a limit on cloud storage, but I've definitely not exceeded it as there isn't much really, just some music and a few photos. The message was referring to storage on the kindle itself.
Thanks for your replies - I guess it doesn't matter too much as I have another kindle, but it does seem a bit of a waste if it can't be used.0 -
When you say Normal Kindle, are we talking about a Kindle e-book reader? If so, simply delete books from it. The books won't be lost, they simply revert to being held in your Amazon cloud account, but they will be removed from the Kindle devoce freeing up space.... Think if you plug it into a chrome book it just pops up like a USB stick. (Not sure!)
Give it a go and see what happens! you can't damage or destroy anything!Laters

I'm such a fool: it's a kindle fire - DOH! It said so when I switched it on...I know, I know, but I've never paid much attention....
Anyway, I've connected it to the chromebook and nothing happened except a message on the kindle telling me it was 'connected to a low power charger', but it doesn't seem to register with the chromebook.0 -
If you have most things stored in the cloud and don't mind setting up your Fire tablet again, do a factory reset to get rid of whatever rubbish is filling up your tablet. Go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults.

If you're not keen to do that, you can install a file manager app like ES File Explorer that will allow you to browse and delete files like you'd do on a PC. Or Clean Master if you're not really sure what you're doing and would like an app suggesting what you should try deleting.
Even if you do go down the factory reset route first, you should still install one of these for future use.
