Contribution based JSA after redundancy

Options
Hi I wonder if anyone can help me. I was made redundant at the end of June 2015 and in addition to redundancy payment also received 3 months PILON. I did not sign on as I decided to have a break before seeking a new job. I understand contribution based JSA is payable for 6 months but I cannot work out if I have lost this entitlement by not signing on immediately.
I now intend to look for a new job. If I sign on will I get JSA for 6 months (if cannot find a job) or will it be 6 months from end of notice period i.e. until end of March only
Hope that makes sense
Thank you

  • you should not have a problem, there is no requirement to start a JSA claim immediately after leaving work.

Contributions-based JSA is based on your NICs in the previous 2 years, so no, you haven't lost your entitlement to claim.

It will be paid for 26 weeks and you'll receive NI credits.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

But those nics do not count towards the State Pension, no?

    Unless rules have changed.

No, these NI Credits do help to fill in the gaps towards your state pension when unemployed.

You can check your NI record online:

    www.gov.uk/national-insurance-credits/overview

They'll post you out a statement within around 6 weeks.

    I went to appointment today
Yes I am entitled to contribution based JSA for maximum 26 weeks
Yes my NI for the duration of the claim is covered and counts towards my State pension, although I do not think I need anymore
