Slight seepage from front pipe

I have just had my VW Polo 2003 MOT'd and it passed with the advisory for the second year running. It has a slight power steering seepage from the front pipe.

I have been quoted £260 for the work to be completed.

If I leave it, when it eventually needs doing, will the amount be much higher to fix?

As above, yes probably. You could potentially end up with damage to the power steering pump or whatever, if the fluid level drops too low, or if the pipe fails suddenly and catastrophically. If it's just a replacement pipe, or a seal, that needs replacing, I can't see it being that expensive. Who quoted you that price ? It's probably worth finding a decent local mechanic ( ask friends & neighbours, or a local community Facebook group if you have one ), you may find it's not such a huge job.
  • The price quoted was from my local garage. I have used them for 10 years now. To be fair they are pretty good, never do work for the sake of it.

Might just ring somewhere else for a second estimate

    DON'T!

If you have a local garage you trust, that is worth staying with. Rarer than a plumber you can trust, rarer than rocking-horse manure that is! The garage will appreciate your 10 years of custom and will be looking forward to more years with this motor or the next.

Believe me on this, I am an ex-workshop foreman and we loved our regulars, they were our bread and butter, we looked after them.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

A repair is better, but I've had success in the past with the power steering stop leak type products, particularly on older cars. A Peugeot 406 I had was still leak free when I sold it 3 years later.

If its like mine, the front pipe corrodes and has to be replaced. The good news is that it is on the return side so there is no pressure; it's just there for cooling. I cut out the rusted section on mine and repaired it with some 10mm copper microbore pipe and joined it up with 10mm internal ID fuel hose clamped on. Works a treat and cost about £15 for the pipes and £10 or so for a pipe bending spring thing.

Power steering stop leak won't fix this; it will only temporarily help leaky seals.
