Ford Ecoboost engines
Hi there,
Considering buying a Ford B-max or C-max with the Ecoboost engine. Any of you got experience of this engine and would like to comment on positives and negatives? Also have heard from one car dealer that they are expected to have a shorter lifespan as 'they are underpowered and would burn out'.
Also, if you are a Ford owner, have you got any of these extras like the Driver Assistance pack and parking assist. How do you find them?

My girlfriend has a 2014 Fiesta Titanium 1.0 EcoBoost. It's a fantastic little engine and copes really well in town, on the motorway and on country roads. I had a 2-hour drive purely on country roads last week and the car coped brilliantly. It didn't feel underpowered and made for a very comfortable ride.
I'm not sure about the dealer's comment as there are plenty of cars out there with small engines that have done relatively high mileages.0 -

What are they like on long hills or with heavy loads?0 -

I understand the standard 125ps one litre eco boost will provide 160ps through software alone and 180+ with hardware changes.0 -

Significant sums of money would have also been spent on a lot of kak engines out there too. Audis AKL engine; Mazda had a short run of their Mazda 5 engine in 05 and 06.
Although what a lot of people don't seem to grasp is it's often not an engine that sees a car put to bed0 -
I have a Focus 1.0 (125ps) since Sept 2013 and can't fault it at all. The engine is fabulous and is considerably more responsive than the 1.6 engine it replaced. It doesn't run out of power on hills at all.
I'm not sure how long the engine has been out now but there don't appear to be any known issues with the engine at the moment so fingers crossed.
I bought a 1.4 TSI Scirocco in 2010 and got rid of that prior to the warranty running out due to issues with the coil packs causing misfires and wrecking the cylinder heads so I suppose you pay your money and take your chance at times.
Personally, the only thing that would put me off buying another Focus would be the Ford customer service which has been abysmal but that's another story.
If you do go for the Ford be aware that the Ford 3 year warranty covers mechanicals only - interior trim and wheels only have 12 months.0 -

What mpg do you get, just out of interest?Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)
Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,0000 -
Rather then reinvent the wheel, read this recent thread which has a lot about the Ecoboost engine in it.

It doesn't run out of power on hills at all. I've driven it with some big, heavy bags of animal supplies in the back which added a fair bit of weight. The car didn't struggle at all.
Personally I would recommend the 125ps over the 100ps. I had an Ecoboost 1.0 125ps Fiesta courtesy car a few weeks ago and it pulled like a train - I was really impressed.. I noticed a difference between the 125ps and 100ps engines and would personally buy the 1.0 125ps over the 1.0 100ps.0 -

Nowhere near the claimed figures but I didn't really expect to.
The best I have had is around 50mpg driving from Sheffield to London down the M1 and also on holiday in Norflok.
I commute about 6 miles each way to work and return about 36mpg but have just put Michelin Cross Climates on which appears to have knocked about 1.5mpg off that.
How am I so accurate you may ask? Well I only ever fill my tank to the brim and have a nerdy spreadsheet with my mileage and fuel consumption going back years:D0 -
My wife has a 1.0 ecoboost Focus - on short trips (her main run is less than 2 miles) she averages around 30 mpg or just a little under. Her last petrol car was a 1.6 Volvo S40 which averaged around 22 mpg.
On a decent run (motorway) it can get just above 50 mpgTotally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0
