Physical Requirements.. Surely not?

Hi All,
I have just requested an application pack for a Nursery Assistant job in a school. Upon reading the person specification I have found under the Phdyical Requirments that it states you need "normal hearing with or without adaptations" and "normal vision with or without adaptations".
Surely that's breaching some kind of discrimination law? I'm in the right mind to email back asking them to define normal!!
As someone who currently works in the SEN sector stuff like this infuriates me as not only does it discriminate against the individuals but the lack of exposure to young people is what causes a lot of ignorance, expected much more from a school

Are you joking?
That's perfectly reasonable.
It just means that hearing and vision should be adequate (and if required a hearing aid or spectacles would need to be used whilst working)
Some jobs require certain physical abilities and that's perfectly reasonable.0 -

I think you should.....
And good luck with the application for the job after you do that.0 -

Given the fact you'll be responsible for the care & supervision of children I would expect that would be a given - unless that is you want someone looking after vulnerable members of society if they can neither hear or see properly. They're not excluding people who wear hearing aids or glasses, indeed it states "with or without adaptations" - namely a hearing aid or a pair of glasses/contacts.
Your post is confused though, you seem enraged at one thing only to discuss something completely unrelated at the end of your post.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Oh dear OP , rushed that didnt you

In what way does it discriminate against anyone to ask if they can see or hear with or without aids?0

Based purely on this post (rant!) I would be infuriated if someone with your attitude was allowed to supervise or teach children!
No, it does not breach "some kind of discrimination law"!0 -

I *think* (please note, I am only trying to interpret!) that the OP is asking, for example, can the nursery discriminate on the basis that someone is completely deaf? Or registered as partially sighted? As part of the recruitment process, can they say, basically, "no deaf people".
I am guessing (once again, just a guess, hard to tell from this rant!) that she is querying it as it falls under a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.
I am trying to help OP..........:rotfl:0 -

Are we not allowed to have health and safety requirements for jobs though?
Or do haulage companies for example have to employ blind people if they apply?
I know I'm being ridiculous but the OP started it so thought I'd join in;)The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

discrimination of protected characteristics can be overridden if there is a genuine occupational requirement and a legitimate business aim. In this case, the health and safety of young children would be compromised if left in the care of a partially sighted or deaf person who possibly could not be alerted to the fact that the child was in danger.Mortgage = [STRIKE]£113,495 (May 2009)[/STRIKE] £67462.74 Jun 20190
