I think it must be design of ladder?
The loft hatch will open and close without catching with the full length ladder as supplied and uncut. When fitting, the frame with hatch and ladders attached is fitted into a hole in the ceiling. The hatch is opened and the screws holding the ladders onto the hatch are loosened and the ladders are moved about 2" away from the hatch. This gives room for your toes when using the ladders. Has the installer cut the ladders to length before moving them away from the hatch?.

Does the fitter specialise in fitting loft ladder or is he a carpenter who may have never fitted this type of ladder before?.

Yes he is a specialist. He has agreed to order us the longer ladder (we'll pay £90) and install it. Should be resolved OK.

This was successfully resolved - fitter came back and now we have correct length loft ladder.
