£26k cash, what would you do?

This is abit off topic, but I've been watching the great British benefit hand out on channel 5.

For these who haven't seen it, they give 3 families £26k and the have to sign off benefits for a year.

How much would you have to earn to earn £26k after tax and NI?

We currently live on my salary of £24k which I'm guessing is about £18k take home, my standard of life would go up!

Could you live on £26k, would you life be better or worse? Would you try an start a business?

    Your £24k = £19,407 takehome per year.

As has been said above, £26k is a £33,696 annual salary.

    These days there's auto-enrolment, pension.

So, you need an even higher salary.

How little is it possible to spend on people and keep them alive? We can't experiment on people with votes, but there are plenty of undocumented refugees out there.

Quarantine them into camps, say 10 people per camp.

Camp A, £1 per person, on food, water, etc. per day

    Camp B, £2 per person

    Camp C, £3 per person.

    etc.

If the subjects in camps A and B die out, but C and above live on, we can set the minimum life support cost at £3 per day.

For some reason, I always assumed school dinners worked on this principle.
  • My family lives on take home of £2k per month, and we even save £150 of that. 4 bed house, mortgage and all bills and we're both 35 so life still costs a bit...!

Takes some serious Moneysaving mind you, but I love a bargain.

The thing is we save a decent proportion of our income so we have the cash there if we need it. It changes your mindset a lot knowing that you can splash out if you need to.

Could we live in this with 3 kids, hmm. Tougher but I reckon if we stopped savings and pension contributions, stopped some of the leisure items then we could. But my expectations were low as I grew up without much money.

I'm retired and my wife and I live on about £2.5k/month, save about £1k, I don't know whst for tho'! So have masses of dosh in investments!

We run two cars, both 15+ yes old, but I don't want a new one.

Paid off our mortgage in the '80s.

And that was all on a wage of never more than £30k, and my wife's £10k

    Cheers fj

My friends mentioned this the other day. 26k for signing off?, most people just get a zero hour contract.

I'd use it to either improve my chances of finding a job with a trades qualification or something similar or start up a little business venture, mobile catering or cleaning.
