I think she would work part time on weekends were she would work now. She doesnt want to live in student accom as she wants to concentrate and not go out drinking every weekend! Would a 8k loan cover her rent and living costs? Seems a bit low, thanks

She'd travel from Derby to Doncaster every weekend to work ?
So she'd be working 2 x 8 hour shifts and find time to see you ?
Doesn't sound like it's sustainable with fares and no time to herself -plus any study time at the weekend.

She could move into a private shared house with 3rd year or Post Grad students but she'd need to start networking now. Most students sort out accomadation by May/June time for the following September.

Does the company she works at have branches in Derby ?

She's a 27 year old adult woman. Why is she expecting you to support her, instead of making plans to support herself?

She thought she would be at a local uni were she could still live at home but turns out not now!!

Even if she was living at home, she would need student funding to pay her tuition fees. It's worrying that someone can get a place on a degree course without being capable of sorting these things out.

If you stay at home and continue to save, don't forget HTB ISA for you and your partner, assuming you will both be first time buyers.
  • I'm sure your gf was just concentrating on getting on a course to do her degree. Is there a chance that if she waited a year, did an extra qualification that she could gain acceptance at the local course? (You will need to find out why she wasn't accepted locally). This might be better than just having her go to Derby. But it depends on what is most important to both of you.

Otherwise she will have to apply for a loan, find lodgings and a part time job. If she starts now, she can do all this in time. Networking is a very useful idea (getting tips from people already studying there).
