Well it peaked at 6,800 in year 2000 and is now around 6,200 which to me says it hasn't risen so it ain't going to make you a millionaire.
Some indexes like[STRIKE] S&P500 (US)[/STRIKE] and DAX (Germany) are total return indices and do include the effect of dividends, so it's also necessary to take care when comparing indices for various markets over terms that aren't short.0 -

The advice on being careful with comparisons is good, but it's misleading to say those indexes "are total return indexes". Like the FTSE, they are *available* as both price index or total return versions, but it is more common for S&P to be quoted as just the price version. If you literally type " S&P 500" into a Google search box you will get a graph showing 1989.26 which is the capital only version.
You are right on the DAX which is a bit unique compared to the other major developed markets because *unlike* the SP500, that one will be the TR version unless you ask for price only.0 -

After reading far too many of your posts, I have seen childish personal attacks on Tories especially Osborne, many attacks on the supposed policies of the Tories, one admiring comment on Labour, and an admonition of someone for making a critical remark about Blair. So no, you clearly despise the Tories, and rather like Labour. However, I'm not sure how this nonsense relates to this thread.0 -

Maybe if you *both* stopped yammering on about which politicians you hate or like or allege the other to hate or like, there would be rather less of the "nonsense" on the thread.
Just a thought. [ducks]

If only it was so simple. I ignored his 'yammering' for ages, but it get's annoying. I note you responded to some of them, as have many others. Double standards? Anyway, let's not respond from here on. I bet they continue.0 -

Am I the only one who thought these were going to be documentaries about people who manage to "play the system" and claim housing benefit despite being millionaires? (The sort of "colourful" people who manage to claim for 22 kids and that sort of thing.) It's actually about people who let to people on housing benefits and are millionaires. Why this would be noteworthy is beyond me. If you are on benefits then the owners of the shop where you buy food are likely to be millionaires, the people who make your clothes are likely to be millionaires, so why would it be a surprise if the person who lets a house to you is a millionaire?0 -
