Cheapenergyclub/GreatBritishcollective conflicting reports

Hi! I used to run searches for best gas and electricity providers in different comparison sites through MSE and they would have more or less the same results. Now there seems to be one BIG site for MSE: the Cheap Energy Club.
Then there is the "Great British Collective" site where they choose the "winners" which have been published TODAY.
This site takes you to the "energyhelpline". Now with the same information about my annual expenditure in KW/H and other data, they both give me WILDLY different results.... for instance, according to EnergyHelpLine my best bet is "Places for People" which is in 6º position in CheapEnergyClub. The amount saved is also nearly twice as much in the first search engine..... this is TOO much and I am now very distrustful..... any insights??
Thanks!

  • If your fix is coming to an end be sure that some comparison sites are not assuming you will stay on a standard tariff for the next year.

On energyhelpline for example there is sentence in red at the top of the results section on the results page that allows you to switch to results based on your current tariff only.

Otherwise your results are distorted by a much more uncompetitive standard tariff.

You are right! This is sneaky since I still have FIVE months left of my fixed tariff. And even when you told me where to look it is not clearly stated. Besides, their "standard results" (not a right name for a comparison with my present tariff) the numbers do NOT match the MSE comparison site. Thanks!
  • the way I do it is, if I took out my deal lets say sept 15 and do a comparison on 17th feb 2016, if it asks when ur deal ends I put 17th feb 2017 that way you wont be put onto a standard tariff for it to compare n give you inflated savings

you will get a much better idea of what if anything you save, rather than get distorted savings

Best way to do it on any comparison site is to input your actual gas/electric use age.

Then when the " best" new tariff is shown use their unit rates+ standing charge and calculated your cost and you will then get an accurate picture of the potential gains.

This is a bit of work but works best. The false picture that comparison sites show, is as a result of them assuming you will go onto a standard tariff at the end of your fix. This is however following guidance from OFGEM to help us!!

By the way the energyhelpline web site when used for comparisons does give you the option to get comparisons, in 2 ways one being without the standard default option.
