ppi policy ended 10 years ago - but still paying

Hello! So, hopefully this is a very easy and straightforward question.

I have just phoned Natwest to find out the policy number and start date of PPI I've been paying on a credit card, to be informed that the policy had a start date of (let's say) 1 July 2005, and an *end date* of 31 Aug 2005..... But I've been paying it ever since (I know this because it shows up on my credit card statement every month) - which means 10+ years of payments on a policy that could never have been claimed on anyway since it had ended... right?

I can't find any obvious information about anyone else in a similar situation on the internet (although I'm sure there are people), and really I just want to idiot-check myself before making a claim: that I've basically been paying for nothing and, in fact regardless of mis-selling, am due a refund for all those years of payments. Is this correct? Thanks - all info much appreciated.

    PPI would only end if you cancelled it or the product was no longer available. Do either of these apply?
  • Not as far as I know - when I called up to get the start date for the claim form, I was told that the policy had a start date - and an end date. When I told the chap that I was very confused about this 'end date' since I'd been paying for ever since, he said something along the lines of 'well if that's the case we can investigate that...'.

    I guess I just want to know that this 'end date' means that (however it happened) the policy was not valid after that date (and so I've been paying for nothing anyway).

    Just make a normal complaint if you feel it was miss-sold, your memory of a conversation from 10 1/2 years ago isn't evidence and they might be able to produce a script covering what they would have told you so don't focus on this reason - they would logically ask why you didn't mention it in the 10 years you were paying after you felt the policy ended

    Except that I didn't mention it in 10 years because I had no knowledge of the policy having been... cancelled/ended/whatever. Since I've been paying it every month I obviously thought it was still valid. I only found out about the 'end date' today. So if the fact is that the policy was invalid for 10 1/2 years, and I've been paying for nothing, making the claim pretty much water tight and makes my memory or lack thereof of a 10+ year old conversation totally moot.

    Does this product no longer exist? If it does I expect the bank will respond to your complaint saying the date in question is not relevant and you still have PPI in place. Your complaint is far from watertight.
  • I phoned my bank to find out about my PPI today. I have had 1 single PPI policy on 1 single credit card account. This credit card is still active, and 'payment protection' is still being charged on it every month. This is the only PPI product I have ever had. When I asked what the start date was for the claim form, I was told that the policy also had an "end date". I have never to my knowledge been informed of this prior to today's date. If it no longer exists and I have been moved to another PPI product it has been done without my knowledge (but actually the bank has one single record of a PPI product for me, so that is unlikely). What it seems is that I have been paying for this "ended" policy the entire time so haven't actually been covered anyway. If, in fact, the product no longer exists, why have I been paying for something that didn't exist? There are no further records of my having any other PPI on this card or with this bank (but I am definitely being charged for one).

    If the product no longer exists then you will be refunded. So rather than continually repeating the same thing you need to ask the bank the question, "Do I still have PPI on my credit card?". There is no point in submitting a complaint until you have done this.

    Credit card PPI is a rolling 1 month contract. Its based on the amount of borrowing you do not repay after the interest free period. So, the end date is a red herring and just a data box filled in to reflect it is done monthly.

    Wrong. you could have claimed.

  • Right ok - thanks Dunstonh - that is what I am trying to figure out - what the 'end date' actually means. If it is totally meaningless then it saves me following up on it with the bank.

    Clearly, I have been repeating myself because it seems the question was more complicated than it first appeared ;)
  • Could it possibly be the cancellation date. ? You normally have 30 days in which to cancel. However your start date does not appear to confirm that although you do say 'let's say' for that date.
