Existing medical condition - insurance

Anyone have any recommendations for what to do with holiday insurance declaring existing medical claims (mental health)? Is it possible to declare but not be insured for anything related to it?

Specifically this is for backpackers insurance. Declaring seems to rule out all policies. Comparison sites give no results, and have tried phoning several insurers, who say they can't offer anything, or give massive premiums. Anyone managed to get RTW insurance having declared or are there workarounds?

Cheers!

p.s. happy to have this merged with my other thread if needed :)

The bad news is that insurers do seem to have a real panic about mental illness, certainly you won't get this on line. You need a specialist insurer, you will need at the very least a doctors letter saying you are fit to travel and that it is x months or years since the last episode. I assume you are planning on a long holiday, that again may make things difficult, taking a shorter holiday to show that you can cope away from familiar surroundings might help the search for long term cover.

The best three I can suggest calling are
    All Clear 01708 339295
    Free Spirit 0845 2385000
    Freedom Insurance 01223 446914

    Good luck!
  • Thanks Alan - I'll give them a try. Have recently had a policy on a shorter holiday, so will try that as leverage with other companies as well. And something from the doctors might be of help as well!

I have medical conditions and for the past few years have used Good to go insurance.

Just checked and they cover for mental illnesses to and is done online.

Not had any issues with them myself

    Hope it helps

I've never had backpackers insurance, but I have MH what is classed as "severe" by insurers and haven't had a problem (it costs a little more but you can get it). My most recent was through Staysure, I don't think they do backpacker insurance though.
  • Thanks all - a few ideas to be working with.
