DLA Higher Rate Mobility and Road Tax Exemption

Now here's an interesting one which may relate and which I'll seriously need to check on, and soon! On Tuesday, my Motability-car-leasing husband is going to visit with our son and daughter-in-law abroad to escape the cold weather. On a previous lengthy visit, he came home to a completely shut down car. We had to call out the assistance truck whose driver explained that without use, modern vehicles systematically shut down.
I am intending to drive his car twice a week to work and back (going the long way round on the motorway in order not to mess up the diesel particulate filter, this is not my normal route.
I checked with Motability about this and they accepted this was "in my husband's direct best interests" as I have my own car, which I actually prefer to drive.
Do I need to contact DVLA do you think?“And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”

Hello everyone, and thanks for all the replies. I will double check with DVLA but the way I read it, and it seems the way everyone else has read it, is that it would be better not to claim the exemption as there will be times (usually at least a couple a week) when I will be driving for my benefit and my benefit alone so I don't want to do anything dodgy or risk being prosecuted, particularly as I'm hoping my son won't have these problems for too long and we won't need to keep the claim up. Thank you, LongTallKatie for the info about the blue badge as well, we might be moving fairly soon so I think I might wait until we move before applying as it will come under a different council.
Thanks for all of the replies and I will confirm it with the DVLA as well.0 -
Hi, I'm not so sure about having to change the blue badges when you move. When we first moved from London to the North East I spoke to the local council who told me I didn't have to change my mother's blue badges until they were due to expire. I was also told the same thing when we moved from one council to the other up here.0

Blue Badge, you have applied giving your name, address, telephone contact etc details to make your badge is legal. Not being that person at that registered address [Council Tax bill - Utility bill evidence etc] means anyone checking the Blue Badge can not verify you are who you say you are. Notify your existing issuers so they can update their records, many have an online change of address facility that way they can make sure that your renewal reminder is sent to the correct [new] address.
Best of luck.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Thanks for that info as well, it's amazing how complicated things seem when you're not used to doing them! I just worry about doing something wrong and getting prosecuted. Will apply for Blue Badge here and let them know if/when we move, we can always take in more info or something if we need to. Thanks again

Most LA's will accept the disabled parking benefits entitlement you were awarded throughout the UK. Its usually a quick process if you have to hand your National Insurance Number, old & new address, dob etc. Providing these helps speed up processing and cuts down on fraudulent reporting. The DOT GOV DOT UK has a portal for expressly this purpose, alternatively get in touch with both your old & new LA and take it from there. That way you avoid the dangers of missing your renewal date, having your rights suspended because an authorised officer can't validate your address. and maybe having to start again with the whole application process. Better safe than sorry !Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Thank you, yes, I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry, I can't bear the thought of getting done for something because I did something wrong, it really scares me!0 -
Don't forget to register your blue badge with any hospital you may have to attend as well, as just using the disabled bays can lead to a parking fine at some.0

All have to pay at our local hospital, where there is nowhere near enough parking, but blue badge holders have extra time allowed.Don't forget to register your blue badge with any hospital you may have to attend as well, as just using the disabled bays can lead to a parking fine at some.0 -
At our hospital you have to do this as your reg is recorded in and out. and you can stay any time. Husband in over night, collected next day.0
