Regarding family: My father became ill with Lupus disease. He hasn't worked since. In order to prevent him losing his house we pay his rent. I figure he can go onto housing benefit, but I have taken no action on this part. He lives 5 hours away. Hopefully its something I can do online. He certainly won't do it willingly but as he isn't paying it. I won't allow him a choice. He also has no means of repaying us. If I'm honest, I wouldn't want him to pay us back. Just stop costing us.0 -
Have you ever tried pushed a lawn mower whilst trying to ride a horse?:D
Why would you need a mower when you have grass-eating grazing animalsSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

You could start your own glue company!0

Paying your fathers rent, while he could qualify for housing benefit is not a good move on your part.
But I am sure the taxpayers are happy that you are shelling out.0 -

Of course we could do our own gardening,
If the horses went, the wife would be bored stiff. Its her passion, her hobby. They aren't going anywhere!
I should add, I'm allergic to horses. Just to add to the comical side of the fact they cost us 14k per year.
We have done horses, spending as much (and more)
as you do. When we were time poor.
We have also had horses at a loss less cost when time allowed.
You have said yourself that you have time on your hands. Diy livery would be a lot less.
You have time to garden. Doing it yourself would be a saving and time consuming.
Apart from your allergies you sound like a fit and healthy couple to undertake for yourselves the chores associated with your daily life.
No envy here. I always enjoyed working and latterly it has been at great cost that I have learned the satisfaction of being able to do things for oneself.0 -

So, after a very frank discussion with him. He has agreed to go and speak to his local council to get the ball rolling on housing benefit and disability.
From what I have read, the housing benefit could take a couple of months. The disability side of things (PIP) could take over a year. There are horror stories of people waiting 9months for appointments. Seeing as we havent even started the paper work this may take some time.
I tried to focus on the positives with him, he may end up with a "free" car out of it.
Kind of unrelated...
Can he get housing benefit and pay it to me as his landlord, or my wife, or both?
I appreciate its far more complex than that... but it might give us the project desired.0 -
it could be considered that your tenancy is contrived if you buy a house for a family member to claim benefits for.
it you get a buy to let it is better to have one that you have no emotional attachment to and is treated strictly as a business.0 -

Great. So let us know how much that leaves you extra to save each month, and why such advice as not 'thanked' as it saves you so much?0
