That's the frustrating thing, the attitude of why should i have my sick record marked, and yet selfish enough that they don't care how it screws mine up. I asked for those alcohol foam wall mounted boxes (don't know the name) and was told no, 3 years later someone gets the company to place them, very rare people use them,
I wonder how often they get used in hospitals? I put sanitiser on my hands on the way in (as I think you're supposed to do) AND on the way out, lol.
But I can't say I've noticed anyone else doing it.left the forum due to trolling/other nonsense

Is it not selfish for you to expect that people risk their jobs though? With the draconian way some employers implement their sickness absence policies, asking somebody to take a sick day when they feel well enough to work could mean doing just that.0 -
I think the OP needs to find out more about the reasons for this person's absence, if it's possible to do so. Might he be disabled, with the related problems encountered meaning he needs days off sick.
I used to be Starrystarrynight on MSE, before a log in technical glitch!0 -

So if i am sacked, and unable to claim dole because i was sacked due to too much sickness is that fair.
Not i don't think i am being selfish to expect people to use common sense to know that if they are still infectious to actually think of others, a few years ago people were coming into work with sickness and diarrhea, and it spread within hours, fear of being put on a sick record made them come in, what really happened was most of the call center fell ill.
I'm embarking on a treatment that will mean i have to leave work for a month before transplant, and will be unable to return to work for at least 3 months after, a cold will kill me no i am not being a drama queen, it will kill me, i will have no immune system at all. Isolating myself to save my life, so yeah common sense seems lacking in the work place, or rather the fear of what the manager can do to you forces you to be selfish and not think about others.
I so with Ian Duncan Smith gives me the cure for MS, he says there is one, if he cures me then i should never need to go back onto benefits and be a sponger whilst all around me !!!!! that i am not working - I'm working at the moment but for how long i dont know0 -

We run a small business (myself and DH) have 3 employees, one leaving.
............. also if you can't get in you directly let our clients down as there is not enough of us to work a normal day .............Also there's not really anyone else as suitable that has applied.
Hmmmm?
What would you do?

I would step back and have a proper look at your real needs, coverage and contingency planning.
If you struggle with sick how do you manage holidays?
one statagy to cover is more bodies with less hours each so there is more flexibility and people to call on when one goes down or on holiday.
As for the current dilema if there is no one else and you can't cope with a person down you have little choice but to take this person on by the time the other person leaves.
Make sure any contractual sick pay is discretionary.0 -
Wow, as someone who's been on immune system suppressants for years, if I'd have taken a day off every time I had a sniffle or a threat of a cold I'd have had weeks off work by now. In reality I think I've had one day in four years, I hadn't realised that made me a hated selfish work-martyr!
I carry on working because relatively mild illnesses are an unfortunate part of life. I would have to feel it physically unsafe to drive before I take time off, especially for a 'cold'. If my entire team took this approach we'd have such massive amounts of sickness that everybody's life would become pretty stressful with the increased work load.
I'm lucky that my team rarely take sick leave and when they do, it's genuine. Unfortunately some workers do see paid sick as an entitlement to use.
