The plumber bought and fitted two metal screw and bolt things and another pipe fitting.
The VAT was £40.90.

Has the VAT been overpriced ?

The materials and Labour should be shown as £200.75 then vat added @20% (£40.15p) giving a total of £240.90 incl vat

What does the invoice show for "Labour & Materials?".

I just thought the VAT only applied to the materials

They should send you an invoice showing their trading name,Date,VAT registration number, A breakdown of the invoice showing how much of the invoice is the vat. If they aren't registered for vat then they shouldn't be charging it...... You can check online to see if they are registered for vat (link below) . If they aren't registered but are charging vat then its a criminal offence.

Simply key in their VAT number and click the GB (Great Britain) tab on the Member state tabs. When you type in their vat registration number don't leave any spaces between the numbers.

Vat applies to labour too as well as materials.

As above, there should be a VAT registration number on an itemised invoice.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    Hi,
There is no VAT number at all on the invoice.
  • Then just Ddt VAT and offer him this until he can produce a Valid invoice and Vat nr.
I think it will get resolved quickly.
Offer by EMAIL then you have a paper trail (as such)

If you're concerned, probably best to just keep it simple:
    Dear Trader

Thanks for sending through the invoice (ref#). Could you please forward me your VAT no for my records?

    Best wishes

    etc
