I've been a few times, and learned more about it with a walking guide than just pottering about. Having walked around with her, a lot of what I'd overlooked previously became clear. I would look on TripAdvisor to see what people have enjoyed. I know that we went to the Diamond Museum and felt it was not really worthwhile. But churches and general architecture and the little streets, all lovely.

Wikipedia has a page which gives some history and the main places to see, and you can print off a map from the tourist board or somewhere which will orient you before you get there.

I'm pretty jealous of you. Even with awful Belgian weather, it will still be lovely, and if you can go on the canal (I think they mostly are closed till March) that will also add to the interest, unless it's pouring with rain. I don't think I would bother with a carriage ride, you can walk around and enjoy it.

Nevertheless, if you cannot get a guide, it is still a lovely place to visit, and I'm sure you will return. The (Flemish) Belgians seem to like the British, too. The place is full of Britons, it seems, and there have been historical ties for centuries.

I would go a street or so away from the Groote Markt for food, although we did eat - and do a beer tasting - on the Groote Markt and it was OK.

Hope you have a lovely time.

PS the word for "sorry" is "sorry" which is nice to know when you're crashing into people on the pavements!

We went to Bruge just before christmas and it was a beautiful place.

The cherry beer, is just wonderful.

We just walked and looked at all the touristy places, done the canal trip, they had the ice skating rink in the square.

Enjoy, I want to go back.

Drink Beer in Cambrinus http://www.cambrinus.eu/english.htm More beers than you've ever seen, all with their branded glasses

Watch the hilarious dark movie " In Bruges" before you go - http://www.focusfeatures.com/in_bruges
(Or - if you want to climb the tower in Markt squaire, don't watch "In Bruges")

Eat at Vlaamische Pot http://www.devlaamschepot.be/en/ if you like roccoco decor (and even more queeny roccoco waiters ). But don't have the sludgy veggie stew

Or just walk about. Great place. Cold

I enjoyed the Basilica of the Holy Blood in the corner of Burg Square (next to main square) but if that doesn't interest you there's always the chip museum!!

The chip vans in the main square do great chips, with either mayo or ketchup. Horse and buggy seemed awfully expensive to me.
