Registration plate and vehicle details don't match on insurance database

I'm looking to trade in my old car for a new one. I bought my old one from new but whenever my insurance comes up for renewal I have to input my car details manually as the car comes up that it's an ovtavia not a Fabia. All the other details are correct. I've never really thought about it before but now I'm thinking of part exchanging it will it be a problem and if so does anyone know how to get it sorted.

Thanks.

  • What does your V5 say?
  • No idea how you get it sorted but one of my cars is the correct make but a different model in 70% of databases.

As you say, you have issues with insurers and especially price comparison sites because some insurers are quoting on different cars. It's a bigger issue when you come to order parts. My garage ALWAYS makes sure they give the full details as well as the reg no but they are ALWAYS being sent the wrong parts.

DVLA errors again ! Your VIN number is the car , a registration number can be attached to any car. What is important is whats on your V5 , have you checked the chassis number on the V5 with that on your car. It is likely to be an input error at DVLA.

Thanks. I'll check the v5 when I get home.

It's not necessarily a DVLA error. As I say - my car is down as a different model - but not with the DVLA and not on every database.

There are multiple providers of DVLA data, obviously of varying quality, accuracy and pricing model.

Just checked the v5 and that's wrong too. Will a phone call to the DVLA sort it?

    Perhaps...

Does the VIN on the V5C tie to the VIN on the car, both on the plate and on the plaque inside the windscreen and the stamped VIN on the inner wing? Do they look tampered-with at all?

The VIN will start TMB - that means Skoda.
    There's been three models of Fabia - 6Y (99-07), 5J (07-14), NJ (14-) and three of Octavia - 1U (96-04), 1Z (04-13), 5E (13-) - the model code will be digits 7 and 8 of the VIN.

So your VIN for a Fabia should read
TMBxxx6Yxxxxxxxxx or TMBxxx5Jxxxxxxxxx or TMBxxxNJxxxxxxxxx - if it does, then it's probably just a !!!!-up at the dealer with the paperwork when the car was new.

If it reads TMBxxx1Uxxxxxxxxx or TMBxxx1Zxxxxxxxxx or TMBxxx5Exxxxxxxxx then the paperwork's off an Octavia... It might be as simple as the wrong plates were put to the wrong VIN when the car was first registered.

The good news is that all the VIN numbers match and they are indeed showing the code for a Fabia. Fingers crossed this is enough for the DVLA to get a move on and change it.
