mechanical - the thing is just dead. Have checked the obvious and the problem is the machine not any of the connections0

I'm assuming its significantly more than a year old otherwise you'd be getting it fixed under warranty and that you;ve check the fuse in the plug etc, therefore with DVD recorders down to less than £60 at Argos, and cheaper online i'd seriously consider just replacing it.
Repair companies tend to charge £40-£50 before parts minimum, so i cant see its economically viable.
Even 'big brand' units by samsung etc can be bought from £80.0 -
Its just over a year old, as mentioned above I have checked all the obvious things and that included sockets, fuses etc.
It was Toshiba multi region VHS/DVD recorder and these are still over the hundred mark, rather than just throw away and buy new I thought I would check to see if anyone knew any local repair men they could recommend. Even if it costs £40 its still better all round to get it fixed.0 -
You can get one in the likes of Asda or Tesco for less than £20. You'd probably pay at least that to get it fixed.
We bought one from Asda over a year ago and no problems with it and if it does break down we'll just buy another cheap one.Member #7 SKI-ers Club

You're thinking of DVD Players not Recorders.0 -

Yeah if it still costs that new then its got to be worth checking out. Make sure they dont charge you for doing a quote though. i think our local place charges their minimum charge even if you decide not to fix it.0 -
Any decision to get it repaired would of course be weighed against the cost of buying something new and no doubt, there is a point at which buying new will be more economically viable.
Would like to check out the cheaper and more environmentally friendly options first0 -
Take it back to the place you bought it.
See http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html and in particular this paragraph.
• For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).
A practical example. I bought a DVD recorder from Argos and it went wrong just over a year later so I took it back. They refunded me 5/6 of the original price which I thought was fair bearing in mind I had had use of it for a year. I paid another £20 and got a better recorder than I had before.0 -
I have sent you a PM Alan. It sounds like the PSU has blown.Dave0
