Room upgrades (Tenerife)

We're staying at an hotel in La Americas in September. When I booked the holiday company couldn't offer us a 2 bedroom apartment which we would prefer. So I emailed the hotel and they said that we could book one with them directly but it would cost about £400 extra for a week.
When I looked at the reviews on Trip Advisor, the amount that people reported to have paid was considerably less than this - in fact it was about half the price.
I am assuming that if you wait until you arrive and there happens to be one available it is cheaper than booking in advance? But the hotel told me they can't gurantee room numbers anyway...
I am not sure whether to pay this or not at this point.

It's your choice. No one can decide for you. IME room upgrade prices often vary by date and availability like most travel related products do. Just because some people paid less doesn't mean that you should as well.
Hotels can't guarantee rooms numbers, for obvious reasons, but they generally can and do fulfill booked room types.0 -
Ok, thanks. Yes obviously I can see that you would pay less at short notice but if you do that you run the risk of there not actually being one available.0
