Options
Hello,

Can anyone help me on how to find out an old mortgage account number as when I contacted building society they could not help me. Am looking back to around 1999, thanks.

  • If the lender has no records and you have no records then the only person who can help you lives in a blue box bearing the word "Police" on it.

One of the reasons that most Mortgage PPI complaints get rejected is that most MPPI is set up standalone from the mortgage. This is how PPIis best set up. It appears as a separate direct debit and not collected with the mortgage and does not appear on any mortgage paperwork.

So, even if you find the mortgage account number, this doesnt mean you will find any reference to PPI as that was more likely to be on standalone paperwork.

If you used a financial adviser or mortgage broker/adviser then the lender wouldnt know if you had PPI or not. So, again, knowing the account number wont help you. Plus, being pre-regulation, the mortgage broker/adviser wouldn't have to consider a complaint from you and could just refuse it as pre-regulation.

You can look back at old bank statements and see if there is a direct debit for PPI (dont mix up life assurance or home insurance with PPI either - some do).

Why would you need this? New PPI complaints ended in August last year...

Sometimes the mortgage account number shows up on old Land Registry documents. Try the website on how to apply.  Also you’ll need to have exceptional circumstances to support a delayed complaint, unless you submitted it before 29/8/2019

Finding your mortgage account number may not be sufficient.  For example, if you bought your mortgage via a mortgage broker or estate agent then there would be no insurance bought via the lender.    The lender would not know what insurances you may or may not have.
Also, if your lender is a bank (and not a building society), then all of these used monthly direct debits from your current account to pay for insurances you bought via them.  They did not get paid via the mortgage.
