Thank you so much, that really makes things so much clearer.

Yeh I'm not sure why they offered me the upgrade either, because I was completely upfront with them about my defaults. Oh well I'll know better in the future.

Worth also noting the cash minder account does record on all three CRA's and shows nice green ticks.

  • Try for the Natwest Rewards account - I have 4 defaults (2 with 18 months to go and 2 coming up to 3 years to go). Accepted with no issues and it's only £3 a month but if you pay your council tax, water, electric/gas and sky/virgin/bt then they give you 3% cash back. I break even just with my council tax so everythign after that is a bonus and over the year I will have made about £50!

I'm completely happy with my cashminder account. I wasn't interested in changing accounts at all until I was told that the standard account would help contribute to my credit score (the cashminder doesn't do that).

When a lender looks at your credit file it won't see what sort of bank account you have. It wouldn't know if it's a basic account or a premium account.

The only thing that would make a difference is having an (unused) overdraft facility, which would show on your credit report. Basic accounts don't offer an authorised overdraft.

that is a blatant lie from them. all current accounts report as 0 each month with a green tick, whether basic or 'full'. unless there's an OD involved.

I'm still struggling with why Co-Op are on this 'upgrade' trail as I asked them if they were removing the cashminder and they said no, so i don't get it.

my reports simply show the Brand name and nothing about sub account type.

Go to Lloyds Bank and apply for their Classic Current Account. If they reject you they might offer you their Basic Current Account which is only open to those who are not eligible for their other current accounts.

I am almost done paying off one of them. The other three I've not heard from since I defaulted.

That's why you're getting rejected. If on your credit file it says you're paying the default, it's partially or fully settled, it looks better than a default you just ignored.
