Removal of old immersion tank

We've recently bought a house that has a gas boiler, but was previously on an electric immersion heater. The old immersion tank is completely redundant now and taking up a lot of space in the spare room cupboard. We're expecting a baby and need all the storage space we can get in the spare room!

Is it something we can tackle ourselves or something we ought to be getting a plumber/electrician in to help with?

Thanks :)

  • Logic would say that it should have been removed when the new gas boiler was installed, especially as the copper tanks are usually worth a few quid as scrap. You should find out if its been totaly decommissioned, pipes cut and capped, electric supply cut and capped, if so, whip it out, if not, you need to get someone whos more competent in.

It may have been left in as a back up in case of boiler failure.

Is the new gas boiler a combi? Gas system boilers still need a tank in the airing cupboard, as they don't heat the tap water directly but via a coil in the tank....

If you do take it out, be careful to cover all carpets etc before moving it, especially if going downstairs.

You may think you've emptied it, but you won't, and the rusty water inside could cost you more than any £££ you'll get from a scrappie!

I'd just leave it alone until you change the carpet and do some serious renovation work where moving it won't cause any further damage.
