Lost ticket - train delayed

I'm confused why some stations will retain my ticket and sometimes I end up the barriers trying to dismember me as I follow the person in front because I didn't take my ticket back
Well in theory:
if your ticket could legitimately be used for a further journey (not always obvious) it should be returned
if it couldn't, then it should be retained
but don't expect that decision to be right 100% of the time or even consistent0 -

It was a single ticket and I used it in the barriers of the ticket's destination0 -
Surely the train company would notice that the same person is trying to claim twice against the same train? Claim for the second one as to claim for the first would be a) fraud and b) less in compensation than the second.
Edit - Just realised that this thread was originally started a few months back, but surely the TOC would have a way to weedle out people trying to reclaim lost tickets also against delays?0
