Lost ticket - train delayed

I bought a ticket for a certain journey and picked it up about a week in advance, only to end up losing it and of course the collection code wouldn't work a second time. I needed to get where I was going so bought another one at the station just before the train was due at a much higher cost.
Whilst I was paying for my ticket I heard talk about cancellations, replacement bus services and sure enough on checking the boards my train I'd paid for twice was cancelled. I used my ticket to take an alternative route which turned a 1h55m journey into a 3h15m journey
This is enough of a delay to be eligible for the operator's delay repay scheme.
Can I get a refund on the first ticket which I lost, so I can only send proof of purchase rather than the ticket?
Can I get a refund on the second ticket which was purchased after the train had already been cancelled?

they won't care for the first ticket as you don't have it. but defo claim for the second one.0

What confused me is the station insisted on people buying tickets even though they had no hope of getting anyone anywhere less than 60 mins late and elligble for a full refund.0

i agree that the first ticket which you lost is a lost cause, but you should definitely be able to claim for the second one, i think its completely wrong they let you purchase it even though the train had been cancelled. just a way of them taking your money!Olivia Rose0

I have had a refund with only proof of on line purchase. I explained that my ticket had been retained on exit (in the machine) before I realised I could have a refund. That was with Virgin.0

I sent London Midland a screenshot of the order confirmation page from Virgin Trains's website in place of a photo of the ticket, I got a voucher through the post this morning.0

Some stations retain the tickets (if you do not specifically ask to keep them), but most stations served by Virgin would not.
I'm confused why some stations will retain my ticket and sometimes I end up the barriers trying to dismember me as I follow the person in front because I didn't take my ticket back0
