Can you withdraw an insurance claim?

I was hit late last night by a someone pulling out of a (pub!) car park. The driver did not stop, but I took down the registration number and reported the incident to the police. There is bodywork damage to the rear passenger door and some scratches to the hub cap. The other car left behind some paint and bits of glass, so there's damage to the body and possibly the lights there. I wasn't injured. I was definitely not at fault, I was driving below the speed limit, in my lane, had my lights on etc. There was also an independent witness, who told me that the other car "just pulled out". I have this person's name and phone number.
I also called my insurer (Axa) this morning to start the process of claiming.
However I just called the police again (remembered some more details), and was told that the reg number I gave them belonged to a car that matched the description I gave, so, fingers crossed, there may be a chance that they could find the other driver and I could claim from their insurance instead. Will Axa let me cancel the claim (and maybe let me keep my NCD)?

You can`t withdraw it and anyway you have to report all incidents to your own insurer, no matter who`s fault.0

Reporting to them and claiming from them are two different things, surely.
I've no problem with reporting, but maybe I don't need to claim from them.0 -
Call your insurance?0

You can`t withdraw it ......
You can cancel (withdraw) your claim at any time.
Though you need to do so before your insurer has spent any money over it (otherwise you would need to refund them if you want the claim to be dealt with by the third party)
Ring them ASAP and tell them you no longer wish to proceed with your claim as you are dealing directly with the third party.
If the third party insurer won't play ball you can still go back and open up a claim on your own insurance
(You can find out the insurer with the reg number by using Askmid - costs £4)0 -
Thanks. I was hoping that was the case. Now the police just need to find the other driver, they have to admit guilt, they have to have insurance, their insurance has to play ball, possibly my insurance has to play ball....
Bit of a bummer really.0 -
Now you have told them it will be on file, so you will need to declare the accident in future , up to 5 years i think , depending on insurance company some maybe 4 years0

it's a PITA when some idiot does this to youir car. I'm with Admiral and I almost had a clean 3 year record (Admiral ask for 3 year record). My non-fault accident and notification only incident just go wiped out from my record and was about to renew with a clean record in the new year and then some !!!!!! scraped my car and caused serious scratches to it and have a notification only incident on my record that will take another 3 years to wipe out.
It's hard to say whether it actually affected my premium or not. I have done exact searches like for like using a fake persons quotesearch and I got a higher quote without any dinks in the record. I think the insurers just check some insurance record before giving quotes and if they find that such person doesn't actually exist in their database they might bump up the premium.
I really dont like making these non-fault notification online incidents it just makes the premium for the postcode much higher.
The non-fault collision accident occurred on my street too when some ididot just pulled out as I was driving past. The scrape while my car was parked occured outside my house. Can't be good for general premium for the area.
Though the area I live is full of 1 way roads now, hopefully that will reduce collisions and reduce premiums in future.0 -

Bit of a bummer really.
Which is why you claim off your own insurance, and they make recovery from the other party if possible.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

But if I can claim directly as a non-fault claim from the other insurance, that means my current NCD will be safe?
I know that I will probably still have a higher premium because there is an incident on my record, but it might help a bit. I need to talk to the police again tomorrow but maybe I'll give it a go, if it turns into too much hard work, I'll claim from my insurer instead and just swallow the loss of my NCD.0
