Barclaycard and late payment

I currently have a 3 year 0% blance transfer deal on a Barclaycard and I stupidly forgot to make payment on time this month. As soon as I realised I made payment but have now had a late payment charge applied and a default letter sent to me. The payment was a couple of days late.

I seem to recall when I got the card it said if I made a late payment I would lose the 0% promotional rate. Has this happened to anyone else and should I start looking for another balance transfer deal? The deal ends later this year anyway.

  • Yes, you are likely to lose the promotional BT rate following a late payment.

I have got my next statement and although they have charged me a late payment fee they have not charged me any interest and still says 0%. Perhaps that will happen in my March statement. Have contacted them to ask.
  • It is worth calling up and apologizing and saying how you plan for it not to happen again (maybe by setting up a direct debit), then ask if you could get the 0% reinstated. Providing this is the first late payment they will usually do this - they did for me anyway.

Thanks - this is my first late payment in nearly 3 years and was just an oversight on my part. Nothing from Barclaycard to say (yet) that they are removing the 0%. Just want to be prepared.
  • Hmm just checked my statement again and there is estimated interest for next month so presume they are going to remove the promotional 0% from next month.

I agree. I have only forgotten a payment once and when I rang up in a panic over the late payment fee they immediately removed the fee. I got the impression this was their standard procedure for a first time late payment from an otherwise good customer.

Don't you think its funny how we accept some charges, and not others ?

For example, you go to do your shopping on the high st, you come back ten mins late, and find a penalty charge notice on your windscreen, most people kick off something chronic.

Yet your credit card company charge you £12 (used to be £35) for been two days late with a payment, and your ringing up to apologise !!!

Yet in my opinion, both charges are equally wrong !!!

If you call up and just advise them it was an oversight and that you didnt realise and paid it asoon as you did they will generally speaking remove the charge and reinstate your 0% offer if you are a good customer.

It may be worth setting up a direct debit for the minimum payment just incase you ever forget to make the payment the minimum amount would be covered.

Re. parking tickets, I think it depends on why you believe you should not have been charged. Most people who "kick off" might do so because they believe it erroneous on some basis such as the bay/area not being clearly marked, or they dispute that they were entitled to park there for some other reason. If however they accept that they should not have been parking there or wish to contend that they were "only 10 minutes late"... then you may find their approach is also a little more at the "apologetic" end of the spectrum.

I think It also depends on who you are dealing with. A credit card company - who's brand is often marketed as service-oriented and customer friendly - is more likely to respond quickly with goodwill toward a customer who is polite and apologetic. Being apologetic doesn't necessarily mean you accept the charges are morally justified... it's sometimes simply the easiest way to get something overturned.

Versus a local council or council contractor who is less likely to care about such niceties, in which case you may be forced to make more of a nuisance of yourself to get somewhere.

Agree with all of this. I've had this happen and the bank refunded the fee and honoured the rate even though it was totally my mistake. If you don't ask, you don't get.
