Less tourists, less busy than Lisbon/Algarve, cool enough place for a three or four day visit IMO, used to be considered good for night life among locals, but no idea what it`s like now, and yes maybe not the best temperatures at this time of year, but probably better than Scotland?

I wouldn't like places that were too busy either, but when we went to the Algarve in December, there was hardly anyone around, the restaurants were always almost empty and when we went to the beach, once we were the only ones there (this was at 1.00 pm and it was very sunny) and the other times there were just a few people there. So I don't think that the Algrave is very busy during the winter, but we do tend to head for less busy places anyway, we went to Tavira.

No one is saying you can't have kids and rent as obviously you can. But that said is it fair on the children that you end up lugging around cheap rental to the next? I'd much rather children were bought up in stable loving family homes.

Wouldn't we all... The problem is the housing market is anything, but stable.
Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending

Not quite as depressing as the incessant whining from some loser who was kicked off hpc for these sort of petty barbs

Why? One of my main hobbies is walking in the countryside, I just wouldn't consider it a holiday being in a busy city (a nightmare rather than leisure). I appreciate beautiful countryside, i.e. woods, forests, lakes, hills and mountains etc. It is far from depressing, it is actually very uplifting.

I've done several week long cross country hikes and many day walks over much of Europe. I love it too.

My comment was becauseI thought you were talking about living there and I'd find it depressing to live in an area with no real life around.

Hey there. You sound like a nice person. The type of guy people want to have around. Calling strangers losers shows just how alpha male you are. I'm in awe of your manly manliness. Up and at em champ.

I am talking more about holidaying there than living there, we would probably spend 3 to 4 months there, but that might well be in a few places (not staying in one place). We want to fully explore both the Algarve and Southern Spain. If we do find somewhere that we want to stay for most or all of the time, it would probably be on the outskirts of a town which has decent restaurants, a bowls club, a chess club and lots of places accessible for both hiking and cycling (off road so my dog is way from traffic).

Hopefully you find something that suits you! Apologies if my initial comment sounded stark but for me holidaying in remote quiet locations is great, but day to day, I prefer to be in a location with a wide social network. Kind of why I love London so much. The amount of people you can meet from all aspects of life is great.

I loved London for the first 10 years, from 32 to 42 years old, but after that I longed for a more rural lifestyle, I have never regretted moving to Dorking from London (it was right for us, but I accept that doesn't make it right for everyone).

Although ironically it isn't impossible that we move back to London for a year or two, I will be selling property in the not too distant future, and we may decide to move back into one or two properties. With the intention of slowly refurbishing them to sell, it would mitigate about £35k of CGT per property (ones that we have not previously lived in before). As I pay 40% tax and approx 10% NI on my salary, I would almost be being paid £70k (gross) to live in London (and of course we wouldn't be there during the winter months anyway).

It would also suit my wife, who has a not too well and aging father living in London.
