Hi Everyone,
Recently I applied for a personal loan from Santander and was rejected by their automated system. After looking at my credit reports I found out on one of them (]CallCredit) British Gas had put default against one of my old account (6 years old), which was quite shocking for me as I left that house in 2010 when I was a student.
I was a customer with British Gas from Sept 2009 till Sept 2010 (gas & electric) whilst studying in Uni of Manchester. I always paid all the bills on time, no outstanding amount was left to pay for when I left Manc.
Then I moved to Sheffield for work in 2011. Suddenly in Oct 2012, I started getting threatening from British Gas stating that I owe them 492 pounds for Gas & Electric from April 2012 onwards, while I was living in Sheff and not Manc. I tried to explain them many times by phone, email etc.. I Gave them all possible proofs (bank statements, Uni Degree, job offer letter etc..) to prove I didn't live at that address during that time but all they were after was my Tenancy Agreement from the Manchester address, which I didn't keep a copy of.
They did not send me any formal letters saying that they will put my default against my account, which I think is absolutely unlawful. They have made my life hell as I can't apply for a mortgage or loan because of their mess.
I have tried once again to get in touch with the complaints dept and still they are saying the only way they can remove it is by sending my Manc. tenancy agreement. Even the landlord has not got any copies with him now.
Can anyone please suggest what shall I do?? I've contacted citizen advice bureau, but not sure if they'll be abel to do anything.
Many Thanks in advance.:o

British Gas are serial offenders in this kind of thing. It's why no one should ever go to them for supply of energy. If you were blacklisted six years ago this should be about to disappear, or was the alleged debt six years ago and they blacklisted you some time later?0 -
Hi. Thanks for the reply.
They have put default from Aug 2012 (2 more years before it disappears). My account with them was closed 6 years ago.
Waiting for citizens Advice to get in touch with me, hope they can help.0 -
there's no way you only just found out about this default.
you've applied for no means on credit in 6 years? did you change the electoral role when you moved? did you get a final statement from the last payment to British Gas?
They would've sent it to your new address. thats what N Power did with me.0 -
No, never applied for any other major loans or credit before (as I was a student till 2011).
I applied for a credit card back in 2013, but there was no problem getting it hence I didn't bother to look at my credit score.
British Gas never sent me a final statement from last payment as they didn't cancel my name from the previous address. I have shown them council tax letter and electoral roll registration from new address but they are adamant to see the Tenancy Agreement of the property back in 2009-10 to prove that I didn't live at that address after 2010.
The dispute is from 2012 (2 yrs after I moved out that house), which is absolutely disgusting as I wasn't even living in that city.0 -
so how did you close the account on the last payment?
did you pay that month and then leave? you would've had to have contacted them and done the whole final reading , e.t.c...
they can only remove you once the bill has been settled...0 -
provide the tenancy for the one you moved too following it, this is enough proofDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0
