Hello

I have 2 questions if anyone can answer them :)

1) My mum has been claiming housing benefit for me for 5 years+ Due to personal issues between us im having to move out and i plan to get a cheap flat. Will i have to get a new housing benefit claim and provide all the evidence or can it be transferred over considering they know im already eligible for housing benefit?

2) The bank i was with closed my account a while ago i opened a new account about 2 weeks a go so i wouldn't be able to provide 2 months of bank statements can you still claim housing benefit? or would this not be needed considering they already know im eligble because my mum has been claiming for me over 5 years.

Appreciate any responses as i cant find the info online :)

If you currently live with your mum and she claims housing benefit then they know that she is eligible for housing benefit. You are likely to be a non-dependant on her claim which a) allows an extra bedroom and b) may reduce her housing benefit based on your income.
You will not know if you qualify for any housing benefit until you open a claim in your name. If you are under 35 and are looking at private rentals then this will be capped at the shared accommodation rate for your postcode...possibly around £60 per week but can vary based on the area. The exception would be if you claim disability benefits and need an overnight carer

    2) The bank i was with closed my account a while ago i opened a new account about 2 weeks a go so i wouldn't be able to provide 2 months of bank statements can you still claim housing benefit? or would this not be needed considering they already know im eligble because my mum has been claiming for me over 5 years.

You can use the statements from your closed account (the bank should be able to supply these) as well as the new account
Again there is no evidence you have any eligibility to any housing benefit until you apply. It is possible that someone working, living as a non-dependant will reduce the claimants benefits but will not qualify for any help as a single person
  • How old are you?

Your age will determine if you get the rate for a 1 bedroom self contained property or the shared room rate.

You can't be in receipt of HB if you are currently living with your Mother. You will need to make a new claim with proof of rent, identity, income, bank accounts, national insurance number etc.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

    Im 20 years old.

Im unemployed and seeking work currently. From what i can tell my mother claims 250 for her and 250 for me to cover the rent on her private rented house that im still currently living in. Although i wont be able to for much longer because of the personal issues between us.

Would i not be able to do a claim using my new bank account without going back with the closed one? im not exactly on best terms with the bank who closed my account lol. And the even if i managed to get the old 2 months of statements its gonna be dated well back to early 2015 as its been closed a while.

From what i can tell people open bank accounts specifically to claim HB so surely these cant provide 2 months of statements.

I do have 1 month of the statements from my old account the one showing my account closing and the transactions for the month.

Are you on the Tenancy agreement with your mum?

If you are single, aged under 35 and rent privately, you can normally only claim housing benefit at the rate for a single room in a shared house.

    Housing Benefit for Young People...
  • Isn't 250 about standard for a single room these days anyway? The ones ive seen listed start about 250 and go up 400+ inclusive of bills.

Yes my name is on the Tenancy agreement with my mum.

Whats really preventing me from starting the process is the bank statements will 1 of the old ones and the new one do? because even if i provide 2 months of the old ones they are outdated by nearly a year.

    Appreciated :)

You can't provide what you don't have. Just tell them its a new bank account and provide proof when you closed the old one.
