Halfords refused refund

I am looking for some advice. I am being held to ransom for my personal details if I want an item refunded. I purchased car seat covers yesterday, from halfords and asked at the till point if they thought the would fit my car (they had seen my car two mins previously after fitting headlamp bulb for me). The lady at the till said they are universal but if they don't fit then I can return them for a refund. They didn't fit so I took them back today to a different store (closer to home) and produced my receipt asking to return them. The girl asked for my name, postal address and tel no. I refused to give them as I don't agree with companies continually asking for your information. She then got a manager who said If I don't tell them my information I couldn't get my money back. I left and called their customer services who said the same thing. Do they have a legal right to my information when I am returning something that does not fit my car and for which I paid cash and produced the receipt? I do not want to return them because I don't like them but because they do not fit, which I was told I could do but no mention of 'if you bring them back we want your details'.

Just make up an address if you don't want to give your own, problem solved.

Well as has been said - make up a name/address!

Out of interest is your MSE username actually your real name?

    It can't be ........can it?

Seriously though I wouldn't mind betting that this sort of policy has something to do with abusing the refund policy but as others have said it you don't want to give your real details make them up......especially as stores don't have to give you a refund on non faulty items.

Does seem like a huge fuss over nothing - simply give them some details and get the refund over and done with. Pointless causing a scene.

Beware if making up details as they'll likely use an address lookup system, so if you give them a random postcode it'll likely flag as invalid.

This is likely more to do with fighting serial refunders/abusers rather than harvesting your mundane details.

You have no automatic right to a refund for a return of non faulty items and are reliant purely on the retailer's returns policy. In Halfords case they will allow a return for a refund but only if you give them certain details.

Even if the item was faulty, if you refuse to give details, they will refuse a refund and you end up taking them to court where you have to give them your details anyway, you end up with your money back and they end up with your details.

Stop making things difficult for yourself and the poor staff who have to deal with you and just give the details or take the hit and keep the item without a refund.

Some people! I'd hate to be the poor soul behind the counter having to deal with you.
  • Personal details? Your postal code is hardly privileged information.

As others have said, this is simply to deter serial abusers of what is, after all, a service which retailers do not have to provide.

The details are not "sold on", it's a postal code!

There are some occasions in Life where you can do things the hard way or the easy way.

I wait for someone to pop up and say it's " dishonest. " to give false details.
