How do you know when it's the right time to put your cat to sleep

Thank you to everyone that replied. Took him to the vets this morning,he is now at peace.
The vet was lovely and very respectful to my old boy. A sad day but he had a wonderful life and we have lots of happy memories .

It's the last thing you could do for him after all the other care you gave him. He's running free now.

Oh well done you did the right thing. We had to make the decision about our 20 year old cat in June and it's not easy. You know your head says one thing but your heart is breaking. Very difficult. Big hugs xxx

It's always hard, but he is free of pain now.
Try and remember him as he was when he was healthy and happy, rather than as he was the last few weeks. I found that going through all my photos and making a photo book helped, although I kept thinking I could see him, out of the corner of my eye, around the house for months after we let him go.
It does get easier with time (a cliche but true)

They will not go quietly,
the cats who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them. . . and always will.
