Santander overpayment refund

Hello,
I used to have a student account with Santander, then paid off the overdraft. I have recently received a letter from them saying I overpaid by £108 and they would like to offer me a refund of £140 (including interest). I finished paying the overdraft off in about 2009/2010 so it seems a bit odd that it's taken them this long to contact me. I've also moved house - which they make reference to in the letter and state they need proof of address before they can pay me the refund.
Has anyone had anything similar? I *think* it seems legit but thought I'd check here first. Obviously I am going to phone Santander to check what they say.
Any thoughts or advice appreciated. Thank you.

I cant see how you could "overpay" an overdraft unless it was in a repayment scheme.
because it would just mean your current account would be £140 in the plus.
Which if you then closed the account should of been cashed to you as a + balance.
Seems strange. Probably a false letter trying to get you to give valid ID which could be used to commit ID fraud.Ex Bank Manager. Emergency Fund: £400/£20000 -

This is what I'm worried about. Sorry, I should have mentioned I repaid the overdraft (£3k) and closed the account.
I will phone Santander (not on the number on the letter!) on Monday0 -
Google that phone number, and/or look it up on http://www.whophonedme.com/
Should give a good indication of genuine or scam.Eco Miser

hi all I got the same or similar letter in the post a few days ago, it was sent to my old address where my parents still live and I find it abit odd.
I opened that account around 2004 and closed it maybe 2 3 years ago.
I had some issues regarding possible identity fraud which I disputed with Santander via Experian, this mainly affect my score. we are in the process of sorting that out.
anyway, when I got the letter I was happy and shocked cause I though it was a compensation sort of thing, and it really seemed too good to be true. I will be checking the authenticity because this letter really looked official.
I may have to pop in to Santander in person.
original poster, thanks that I'm not the only one going through this!
by the way they told me refund of 400+ when the account was only been disputed for me supposedly owing 170!0 -
Went into Santander today. Turns out its all genuine. Expecting £400 in my account in about 2 weeks. Great suprise 😅;)0
