Slow seller solicitor/Mortgage offer about to expire

Hi,
Just want to know where we stand with this and if there is any scope for recourse to compensation in our situation.
My partner and I had an offer accepted on a house back in September (2015), and applied for a mortgage with Halifax. Throughout the mortgage application process Halifax made a number of mistakes that delayed the process; sending stuff to wrong addresses, sending stuff without references numbers to our employers, asking us for incorrect levels of evidence and then having to ask for more etc.
Halifax also wouldn't allow us to use our own solicitor and we had to use one on their approved list... which Halifax also proceeded to fail to send stuff to the correct address for... more delays.
Additionally, the seller's solicitor has been terrible, only just last week did he send enquiries to the freeholder that were sent to him in November. We are now at the point where there are still freeholder enquiries outstanding and our mortgage offer expires in 2 weeks. Halifax have said they can't extend our mortgage offer because the product ceases to exist from 1st March.
Because of the rate change, we now stand to lose £600 per year. As well as the X months rent we have been paying due to the incompetence of Halifax and the vendor's solicitor.
Where do we stand? Is it just a case of suck it up? It seems ridiculous that we stand to either i) lose this property or ii) lose £600 per year for the next 5 years because of the incompetence of the seller's solicitor and the lender.
Edit: Just to add that we are FTB and there is no chain on either side... this should have been quick and easy.

You haven't mentioned the vendor in your rant. Have they been as quick as they should have been? Are you part of a longer chain?0

The vendors solicitor taking three months to respond the ENQUIRIES does not sound like the fault of Halifax?
The purchase system in England and Wales is too lax and stinks, plain and simple.I am a Mortgage Broker
