Convince me to work

  • I think you need to go self employed. If its just a case that your one of those people that doesn't fit in the click but you work hard and are intelligent you sound like the ideal candidate for it. In fact you sound exactly like me. I've had job after job of nightmares coming to an abrupt ending. Only reason I can think of is im never in the click. I was never one for going to the pub after work, going to work parties or mingling with any of them. Since going self employed 18 months ago I'm now the local leader in what I do.

I'm in my thirties too, have done various jobs in various sectors and not once been scapegoated or let go. I'm professional and intelligent too, but my employers aren't letting me down. Perhaps as others have said its not your employer at fault.
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

You could always check YouTube for Pauline's motivational videos from The League of Gentlemen, if that doesn't get you back to work then clearly you must be one of her "...workshy c...!"

Are you Autistic or have some other difficulty? I mean this in the best possible way. People look different because they are different eg Hair colour. Same with brains they are various types too. They function in different ways.
    understand what makes you tick.

Using this as a starting point to overcome the root cause.

I only ask because I feel the same and have learnt a bit about Autism.

You mention that you turn up on time, but to be honest, that's a minimum requirement for most jobs - what other positives do you offer?

20 jobs is a lot to have lost - you mention one instance of the employer having moved jobs overseas, what happened with the other 19?

It's very hard for any of us to guess what the problem is, but if you have lost 20 jobs and been disowned by your family it is worth trying to work out what has gone wrong, and how much of it may be down to you.

Try to think about what positives there were, and what aspects of each job you enjoyed. That may help you to identify what type of work and, equally important, what type of workplace you feel may suit you.

also, try to look honestly at what happened with the jobs you lost - not only what you think happened, but also what others said.

OP have you ever asked any of your employers for feedback as to why they have let you go?

I know of a man in his mid 40s who is unable to hold down a job at any level. He is articulate, intelligent and 'talks the talk'. However, 5 minutes after getting into any job he proceeds to tell the managers what they are doing wrong and how they can correct it. It never goes down well, particularly in large corporations. One incident where he managed to get a job as a shelf stacker in a large supermarket. Within a week he told the regional manager that the store was laid out all wrong, and when told that it was a format prescribed by head office, he proceeded to argue at length with the manager. It wasn't a great career move, he was sacked when he became abusive ... but he still cannot see what he does wrong!

Losing 5 jobs, possibly bad luck. Losing 20 jobs and one's family cannot be anything but your own fault.
A quiet period of severe self examination is called for. I think
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I've done my time in min wage jobs:

    - McDonalds

    - Bookies

    - Call center

The truth about all 3 of those? Unless you're awful then your job security is very high!

    Conclusion:

Either you're a rubbish employee or you need a stable nugget grinding job in a safe company.
  • Could be depressed? - sorry the love of some posters is just so embarrassing

Don't beat yourself up OP fortunately quite a few people realise a job isn't necessarily for life - I've known quite a few 50 year old's only 6 months at a job and who actually say can understand why people don't stick around

My brother soon to be confined to one room (he worked) to hard and earnt to much so is proof of pick which row you sit in quite wisely - don't know what to suggest but really agree with someone else recently who posted - why be miserable if you can have the power to change something

Some jobs today are little more then sales pitches :D and to keep HR in jobs - I've seen as many jobs re-advertised as I've had so I don't let it bother me anymore, we all make mistakes...
