I would also check to see if they can make him redundant by absorbing his job into a different person's job spec. I am not sure they can do that, having read this:

What that is saying is that if it is obvious that you are the only person who could be made redundant they do not need to explain a selection process. Offering a different role just means that the employer can offer another job to avoid making someone redundant and paying the costs of doing so.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment.
