I've recently been having a thing popping up when I switched on my p.c. saying that support for version of IE I had ended early January and I needed to update to IE Version 11.

So - I did that. Clicked on the thing on this initial page and it spend ages "doing its thing" and that was me sorted afaik.

That thing inviting me to update came up again this morning and I thought "But I've done that - so what is this coming up again for?" and checked out which one I have.

So I clicked the gear icon on top right screen and went down the drop-down menu that came up and clicked on the IE line and up came a thing saying I have version 10.

Well - its a later one than I originally had - but not version 11. So that's got me a bit puzzled. If it is version 10 - does it matter?

EDIT; Could it be something to do with the version of Windows I have? - ie I've got Windows 7.

  • It should matter. You may want to try a different browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome as an althernative. They tend to be quicker.
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

You should be able to use IE11 with Windows 7, and indeed IE10 isn't getting support updates on Windows 7 any more.
  • How odd that the updating happened - but only took me to version 10 then.

I guess maybe I ought to click on the update page next time it comes up inviting me to do so and see what happens then (ie after a 2nd update).

I did notice that there was a little tickbox up somewhere along the line - that they had default ticked and it was for automatic updating to happen every time and I left it ticked.

Add that after I had updated (so I thought) there were absolutely loads of changes that came through on my computer and, when I went to switch it off, it was one of those pages of "Do not switch off your computer - updating with no. 1 of however many" type things and it took forever for them all to reel through.
  • Oh well. Just done it again - ie downloaded IE 11.

I made notes of what happened this time.

It started by putting up the little box saying it was "installing IE 11" and the line went up the bar as it did so. Then it told me it had finished that and put up a "Configuring Windows updates" screen.

Next thing was a screen saying "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer". It duly did that. I checked which version I've now got and its still IE 10.

I'm wondering if its down to Microsoft having a glitch in their programme. That glitch possibly being that there is a little tickbox on the IE 11 installer box for the customer to tick for automatic Bing and MSN defaults. I didn't tick that box either time - as I don't want any Bing or MSN stuff coming up. So maybe Microsoft forgot to put in a line of computer script IE 11 that "customer is to still be able to get IE 11 - even if they choose not to tick that box" ???
  • Just done quick google and there seems to be no updating due by Microsoft of "Windows 10". I couldn't find anything saying there wouldn't be any updating of "Internet Explorer 10".

    So I have:
    - Internet Explorer 10
    - Windows 7.

Both of which are still updating as far as I can make out.

It sounds like you hadn't run Windows Updates for a while and this may be the problem. Have a read of this ...

You may need to uninstall IE altogether, then make sure all other updates including SP1 are installed, and then try reinstalling IE11.

    To uninstall Internet Explorer
Click the Start button, and enter Programs and features in the search box.
Click Programs and Features in the list of results, then click View installed updates.
Under Microsoft Windows, right-click Internet Explorer, then click Uninstall.

  • If I were to uninstall Internet Explorer - how would I go about reinstalling it afterwards?

As you can gather - I'm not very tech-savvy.

Have you been doing Microsoft updates regularly, I am using W7 on two computers and IE11 updated on both of them over three years ago.

Windows Update itself should recognise it is missing and offer it as a new update and if it doesn't ... https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/internet-explorer-11-for-windows-7-details.aspx

  • Just tried again - with the link you gave me.

Same end result - it went through telling me it was installing IE 11 and then rejected it all and undid it come the end and I've still got IE10.

I have an idea that I read somewhere Microsoft are trying to put pressure on people to swop from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on the one hand and Windows 10 isn't very satisfactory on the other hand.

Maybe this is part of all that and I (and others in my position) just have to "wait it out" and the automatic update tick in box that's there on my IE10 for automatic updating will put through IE 12 (whenever that comes up on the market) and meanwhile IE10 will be absolutely fine in all respects.

So - it still looks to me as if this is something that is "in lap of the gods" (or Microsoft in this case) and I have to wait on them to sort things for everyone in this position.

    Thanks for your help anyways..
