I'm guessing something like this may be appropriate (assuming you have USB ports) http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-RS232-Converter-Cable/dp/B00077DJIQ

  • Hi,

I had this problem with my laptop, I needed a serial port to configure a piece of hardware. I went into a computer repair shop and asked whether one of these would work and the answer I received was no!

I worked closely with serial ports for my honors project and unless you had the specific software it wouldn't let you connect or recognize the serial ports available.

You should be able to download the drivers from the manufacturers or some where on the web. What make and model did you buy?
  • I have now loaded the driver via the disc that was "hidden"in the packaging but it still say unable to open serial port even though the drivers are loaded. ggrrr.

IS it pointing at the correct serial port now? We use USB to Serial port adaptors at work when customers screw up their serial ports. What we find is that hte USB adaptor normally creates a new serial com port number (3 or 4 if there are already serial ports on the mobo) and you have to adjust the config of your software tool to point to the correct port.
Also did you load the software driver before or after plugging in the adaptor and is anything showing in the device manager?
  • Hi Done the loading of driver and still says "unable to open serial port " not a clue what to do and being a non techie...help !!! lol

i use one of these usb devices in my laptop.(hi-grade)
the old laptop had a serial port(fujitsu-seimans)

but not all of these devices work
i bought one and it failed to work on my machine,
however it worked on another laptop.
eventually i bought a cheap one off e-*** and that worked very well .
been using it now for a while

seems that it is a matter of trial and error?
