Getting through the washing...

It always gets a lot of discussion going on here but I am not a wear it once and wash it type of person. Depends of course on what you are wearing, what you are doing, how warm it is etc. Undies and socks excepted.
I always get washing outside if I can. If not I do a load after tea then put the clothes over the airer in the living room before I go to bed. As we are all out during the day the clothes can stay there with the dehumidifier going. When we come home from work I finish the laundry off in the tumbler if it needs it, fold it and put it away.
I only iron what absolutely has to be ironed. Bedding gets done once a week. We all have our own towels and in winter these get washed once a week too.0 -
2 of us here so that's two loads of towels weekly plus a set of bed linen.
I also have a dark/coloured basket and a separate whites basket and they get washed as and when so I'm probably doing about 6 loads per week.
Things get hung on the line when the weather is good but I've always had tumble dryers and have no qualms about using them to get the washing dry.0 -
3 adults here, I do a wash most days and then about 4 at the weekend. I along with ds are wear once and change OH has a uniform at work so wears his clothes more than s day as only on a few hours.
I don't mind washing but prefer it when I can dry outside. I iron a lot of things mostly Sunday morning topped up on Wednesday for anything that can't wait.0 -

I love doing laundry and line drying. I do two loads a day on weekdays, just for the simply joy of it! LOL!
That's how I ended up doing my grandson's washing-my daughter said as I liked washing so much could I do his so as to help her when he was born and didn't have many clothes. 2 1/2 years later I'm still doing it! Keep saying I'm gonna stop but now she's doing her school placement for her teaching degree, so not only am I doing his washing, I'm looking after him every day, plus looking after her dog 2 afternoons a week whilst doing some housework for her! I've got no school age children but I'm absolutely delighted it's half term now!0 -

That sounds like an enormous amount of towels - unless I washed both bathrobes I wouldn't have enough towels to make a full load.0 -
Jackieboy: DH has light coloured towels, so I add the kitchen towels to that wash. The dark coloured towels get washed with the one from the cloakroom but yes, maybe it doesn't always fill the machine!0

I think too much washing is done these days, just because we can.
Febreze is your friend for items just worn once, I'm talking outer garments here.
Bedclothes, well once a week is far too much for me. I am a clean person so what the heck am I changing bedding every 7 days for. When I was a kid the bedding was changed at much longer intervals, and that was when we were two to a bed too!
Anyway, I minimise washing. Towels once a week or so. Bedding once a fortnight or so, outer clothes worn once will be worn again before washing.
Underwear never worn more than once ever. Yuck.
Socks the same.
My mother laughs at all the washing done these days. When she only had the copper at home it was done on a Monday and that was that. Different things for different Mondays too!
Drying the stuff is the problem now. But that's only because every blessed bit of stuff is washed every single day now. And sometimes twice a day.
No wonder there are so many allergies. We are not unclean enough to keep the bugs at bay!!
I am being a bit tongue in cheek, and I wow at those who wash for their country every day.
Only me here, so I'm easy about it. And often handwash clothes with the hot water in the tank and rinse and spin in the washer. Why waste all that hot water!
Line dry as much as possible. Otherwise it's on to an airer in the boxroom/laundry room. Overnight and it's generally dry.
Ironing is a rarity. And never use a TD either.0 -
We are 3 adults, plus teenage DGD here alternate weekends. I feel that our laundry is better organised now due to 2 changes -
1) Got rid of laundry baskets and replaced them with folding plastic storage crates. The baskets used to get stuff randomly dumped in them, and I`d be washing stuff that wasn`t even worn sometimes just desperate to clear the basket, or leaving it ages and feeling it all had to be washed before it could be sorted.
2) When the old WM died I got an `as new` Beko from British Heart Foundation CS, but it was a bit smaller than the old one - 5kg. I thought it might be a bit small and mean more wash loads, but it was such a bargain I`d live with that.
As it turned out, I realised that I was no longer trawling for more stuff to make up a full load, not putting off a load till I had more to wash, and not having to dry so much wet stuff in one go.(No tumbly drier here!) It now feels much less effort to keep up to date with what actually NEEDS to be washed/dried, which is the opposite of what I expected!0 -
2 Adults here,
we used to have 6 boys at home so i know about washing.
NO washing gets done here unless it is smelly or visibly dirty except for undies.
i do 5 loads a fortnight including DH's boiler suit, bath towels and bedding.
Obviously there is more if DH gets into a mess at work or if we have guests to stay or if i wash curtains or something.
All dried on line during better weather currently dried on airer in spare room in front of radiator with dehumidifier on.
Laundry basket with seperate sides for lights and darks and one plastic one to transfer wet wash from machine to clothes line.
Clothes folded and put away when dry absolutly NO IRONING done here.
