Is expensive skincare worth the hefty price tag?

I was getting a colour match for a new foundation today and the lady noticed my skin is quite dry (partly due to the cold weather and partly me being lazy and not taking care of my main now I have a baby!)

She gave me some samples of moisturiser, which I was grateful for. When I got home and looked them up online the full size product is all most £50!

So my question is what (if anything) is different about this product to the cheaper moisturisers (other than the pretty packaging!) Xx

  • Spend the money on decent serums and oils, less so on the moisturizer.

There is a massive difference between cheap and nasty (pound shop ranges), to the good mid priced and good value products. There are some brilliant ranges like avene, loreal, vichy, la roche posey, biotherme, ren and all the fantastic ranges in marks and spencers are under 20 quid.

Remember, some of the ladies selling cosmetics try to pick faults to increase sales. Have you ever heard them say "Gee, you look swell, you don't need any of my products"- nope- me neither. Your were not lazy, just different focus and priorities.

To get the most impact in a short period, oil apply nightly and then moisturizer.

defo if you want a good face.

Was it Clinique? I avoided dermalogica for a long !!! time but gave in when I ruined my skin by not changing my products last winter, then got extreme uneven skintone after a sunshine holiday.

It really pays to invest in your facial skincare, even if it's just for the winter months. plus you can get EVERY brand cheaper on ebay/amazon or through the main site discount sales.

You'll only have to pay for import brands.

I have very bad eczema, the only thing that controls it on my face including around my eyes is decleor. I can't even use products designed for dry skin conditions!

Well as I have mild rosacea yes. Cheap brands seem full of stuff that will set mine off.

I tend to find mid-range brands suit me best. I have dry sensitive skin and eczema and Avene and La Roche-Posay are my absolute favourites. I have never had any luck with moisturisers that cost a few pounds and I wonder if that is maybe because they use cheap ingredients. My skin also hates all the premium brands. I wonder if that is because they seem to stuff their products with high-tech ingredients to justify the price tag and it freaks my skin out.
  • I use clarins - their daily energiser range is very reasonable. Face wash is about £11, their moisturiser is about £20. Really good quality, and I never bothered before I found this range. Also, you only need a tiny bit each day so it can last for a long time!
  • I think it depends on your skin type. If you have sensitive skin you will probably need to spend a bit more on something. However, if you have skin like mine, which isn't sensitive and is normal to combination skin then don't bother. I used a Clinque one for a few years but then switched to a cheapo NIvea one (about £1 per tube from the cheap shops) and my skin is fine.
I do however, spend a lot on make-up as i don't have the time or the inclination to constantly reapply.

Also Aldi have the caviar day and night cream at £6.99 for 50ml. They were queuing out the door for it last time it was on offer. See article below
Aldi's moisturiser is 'nearly' as good as La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe ...

;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!
