BSM are a) rubbish and b) a rip off... Shop around and go for a local provider with a reputation to hold on to... It'll work out much cheaper...

I Second That Bsm Are Useless.
  • DrFluffy - a) BSM are rubbish - can you explain....my friends have joined upto BSM months ago and they have no problems whatsoever with BSM. Their instructors are always
    • on time, unlike my instructor and shes not from BSM..
    • friendly,
    • help them out with how to book their theory and pratical tests...
    • free notes and books to help with their theory...I don't get these freebies you know....
    - b) BSM is a rip-off - It actually works out to be cheaper if you join with BSM. Most local, companies etc offer a block of 10 lessons and you get one lesson free....

On average it takes a student a min of 30 lessons before taking the practical test.
    With BSM you can
    • buy a block of 30 lessons and save £60,
    • use your NUS card so that's £2 of every lesson, wich comes to about £18....my leesons are £22 each so I don't understand how its a rip off?!
    • My friend got a one year RAC membership for passing with BSM, first time too..

Sure - I used them initially in 2 different places.
Instructors ALWAYS late, or cancelling at the last minute.
VERY poor tuition from BSM, and instructors who would happily terminate your lesson 10 minutes earlier to go and meet some one who had just called them on their mobile... Taking mobile calls during a lesson is pritty !!!!!!, and 3 of the 4 different BSM instructors I got through ALL did this.
They generally take 5-10 lessons MORE before putting you in for your test than an independent (information from Oxford test centre)
My independent instructor LENT me all the books I needed for theory etc.
It was 75% cheaper through the independent I used to finally get through (£5 an hour difference in prices, and free lessons - including a free motorway lessons, and reduced price advanced driving lessons if I wanted them), than BSM with all their offers...
Finally, about 5 years ago a friend qualified as a driving instructor, and apparently the industry stories of BSM are worse than my personal experiences!

Yeah I'll second this motion that BSM are crap. Well my opinion is a little screwed from 2 lessons I had with this one guy. He was just awful he even made me do a role play thing with me....just let me drive the bloody car. I switched to a guy that one of my friends recommended and he was great and I passed a hell of a lot faster than I would have with BSM. The guy just seemed to be taking me for a ride and taking it extremely slowly.

My instructor at BSM also insisted on 2 hour lessons...whilst I did have some two hour lessons with my other instructor 1 hour was often better for me so nice to have the choice.

Pretty sure they're flaunting the law there, when you're teaching someone you need to be able to take control of the car and be in charge so doing anything that is illegal for a driver to do such as using a mobile or being drunk would be a no no

I did wonder about the legality of this as my instructor used to do it but the one I changed to was really nice and independent so on the go all the time so had to answer his phone whilst in lessons.

However presumebly if they are using a hands free kit it'd be legal?

The BSM guy I had asked if he could smoke in the car, I said no but he almost made me feel guilty for doing so.
