You could choose a bank that does not require photo ID, or you could get yourself a photo ID.

And do they say what happens if you've no so-called photo ID, as is the case with a great many people?

No sorry no mention but i'd be suprised if they didn't have an alternative option for those who didn't have one.

thats just my opinion i think it would be common sense to have alternatives.

I was probably one of the first to get a Fidor UK Current Account when it was launched. As I remember it, I scanned my ID documents and uploaded them on the Fidor UK website.

But personally having my personal security set at the paranoid level, I would not send such documents by email, even PGP secured email.

You're going to be surprised then! My OH has been battling with Fidor over the past 3 weeks trying to open an account and has been told that it she can't supply 'a colour copy of a passport or national EU/EEA ID card' then she can't have an account.

The things that really p's us off about this are (a) there's no mention of it on their website and (b) it took them 16 days to provide this info after starting the application. Not impressed, to say the least!

She has complained about the delay and loss of interest caused by having the funds sat around in a low interest account waiting to invest in their savings bond. Their complaints handling also leaves a lot be desired. They don't appear to have a complaints procedure document and if we don't agree with their conclusions, there is no recourse to FOS, it has to go through to the German equivalent.

If you are planning to deal with this company be warned ...!

It's getting to the point where those of us that have a passport might as well just publish it on Facebook.

Well, UK is possibly the only country without any proper internal ID document. Is it not funny that some licence is normally used instead and those who don't have even this licence use some bills and statements?

Then we have to stop complaining that passport is needed even if we don't go abroad.
I think for many people that don't drive and don't go abroad an internal ID card, even if optional, would be much cheaper and would last longer than a passport.

A UK passport currently costs £82.25 max and last 10 years. Plus a couple of passport photos, so let's make it £90. That's £9 a year, or less than 3p a day. Enough said.
