Help to find mysterious cheap flights!

Good Morning!

On the 8th of August I'm going out to Spain (Murcia) to volunteer with the charity Galgos Del Sol. I need to pay for my flight there but all I can find are flight from Bournemouth (my local) for £285!

Everyone keeps telling me that I should be able to find flights much cheaper or that they only paid £100 in August. But where?

I've checked all the usual sites.

Can anyone help?

Don't fly from Bournemouth, try Gatwick
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

try skyscanner and use UK as the departure, Ryanair from Stansted will get you there for £94, from Garrick £100 with Easyjet

You'd be hard pushed to find a return flight to Murcia for £100 in August but might be able to get one for between £150-200 without bags etc. As above poster said you will likely need to fly from London though so you will need to consider other expenses and time on top of that.

Unfortunately there won't be anything particularly cheap because Bournemouth has a very limited range of flights so the operators from there can charge a premium.

Coupled with the fact it's Spain in school holidays means you'll need to be a little more flexible with your itinerary.

Is your price of £285 one way or return? Ryanair have a flight from Bournemouth to Murcia on 8th August at 0630 for £131 currently. Based on the fact that London airports are around £100, I'd say that's not a bad price at all.
  • £280 is the return price. I've search for gatwich, Heathrow, stansted, Southampton and they are only marginally cheaper but when you factor in petrol, not much in it.

I've tried doing it as two singles but again, still adds up to same price, the return seems to be the more expensive.

    Supply and demand

You are travelling at peak time - not only is it traditionally holiday time but also now parents are fined for taking kids away in term time many feel forced to travel July/August, other won't take kids out of school, then there's teachers and students, also restricted to the high season months.

Just like anything else the "sale" prices are reserved for stuff that won't sell at full price.

Can you get flights in August for £100 return booking now for exactly the dates you want? No- Could you get flights (probably not from your chosen airport and possibly not for exactly the dates you want) if you waited til a week before ? Possibly- or you could find there's nothing left or it was even more expensive. . Is this the sort of gamble you can take with your trip ?

People talk a lot of rubbish about how someone they know got a flight for peanuts ...omitting to mention it was booked either mega early or mega late , they weren't going in peak times and there was no choice in flight times (and if it's what's left late inevitably it's antisocial times so you may have extra expenses like a taxi to your hotel as th it's too late for the buses.

If it is a trip to work for a charity it probably boils down to accepting the fare is part of your donation to the charity -or finding a company prepared to sponsor you for part or all of your travel costs . Many large companies will sponsor their employees either directly by contributing to their expenses or indirectly by giving the volunteer extra paid leave for the time they are absent from work .

You could also consider seeing if you could get friends or family to sponsor you either by donations or do something fundraising to help get you there - maybe a cake stand or car washing morning- something like that.

  • You could also consider flying to Alicante, It is only about an hour from Murcia airport and may offer more choice of flights.

Taking into account the hassle, time & expense of not being at your local airport each way then that price is OK, - isn't it?
