You could get a key cut that just lets you open the car, cheap enough.
Only handy if you lock the key in the car.

£150 for a new key and coding from VW for a Golf.. Painful but worth having0

For those interested, the new keys have arrived.
The guy told me that these would be new keys as the type I have can't be cloned. The old key has automatically been erased from the car but can be put back on if I find it. The whole thing, money aside, was quick and painless.0
