Hertz car rental deposit

Hi guys, just a quick question regarding the above.

Last weekend OH rented a car from hertz. In the small print it says that a £200 authorization will be made on the account that was used to pay for the rental to 'cover any outstanding charges that may occur'. He also took out the 'super insurance' [or whatever it's called] as the excess of £900, regardless of fault, scared him a bit!

Can somebody please explain this to me?? I feel really stupid because, I thought, they would block £200 which meant the account available balance would look £200 less until the car was returned and they would then 'unblock' the £200. Have I got this wrong?

The car was returned on Monday but the available balance is still looking £200 less than it should. I've checked online banking but the £200 authorization doesn't show up, just the initial amount paid online at the time of booking then the extra money for the super insurance.

Please help because I thought the £200 would be showing by now, or have I total got my wires crossed?? [I have read through their terms and conditions and it mentions the blocked amount but not the unblocking of this amount]

TIA

It will probably take a few days for Hertz to 'unlock' the £200.

The £200 authorisation will never show as an actual debit on your cc card unless Hertz plan to charge you for something extra.

Provided all was well with the car when you returned it that should 'disappear' automatically.

Contact your bank if you are worried or if it hasn't gone by Friday.

You probably have nothing to worry about.

Thank you for your reply, that's kind of what I thought. A bit annoying it takes them so long to unlock the amount, seeing as they take seconds to block it!!

As for the car, it was perfectly fine when we dropped it off. No damage and full to brimming fuel tank :D
  • They'll probably take a day or two before they release it, then the bank will take 3-5 days before they actually recredit your account.

It's a pain, but you will get it back. Give it till Monday. If your still worried though, ring your bank and they can let you know if the money is still being held or not.
