Windows 10

Options
I have a computer which did have Win 7 now upgraded to Win 10

What would happen if I reformatted it now - would it revert to Win 7 or load Win 10?

And what would happen if I reformatted it after July would I have to pay for Win 10?

if you upgrade from win 7 or 8 (sucsessfully) you will se the following

notice the wording says " digital entitlement" , it is now the motherboard (and other parts of the computer) that are registered with Microsoft

What would happen if I reformatted it now - would it revert to Win 7 or load Win 10?

nothing , you would have a dead computer

HOWEVER , you can d/load win 10 (from m/soft site) and burn it to a dvd or pendrive , load it and skip the registration section , when the machine gets its first update , the server will read the motherboard and change the status to being "digitally entitled"

And what would happen if I reformatted it after July would I have to pay for Win 10?

you would do the above , whv should you pay , you are not upgrading , you are reloading

Why would I have a dead computer if it restores factory settings from the recovery drive on the computer?

If you have the Win 7 key you can still install Win 7 (you don't lose it when you upgrade to 10). Or you can install Win 10. Or create a multi-boot...
Obviously "reformatting" means you lose everything so make sure you have saved your docs.

Thank you but why wouldn't the "recovery section is still intact"?

having never had the honour of working a "factory built" PC , I mainly deal with clean installs , and indeed suggest to people that do a win 7/8 upgrade to actually reformat and do a clean install to remove all the unwanted "garbage".

I have no idea if your original win 7 will still be there , or even after an install of win 10 will be acceptable

so ton answer your question (which was rather vague , and missed vital info)

if you upgrade from win 7 or 8 (successfully) you will see the following

If you format a drive, you effectively delete its contents. You would have neither Windows 7 nor Windows 10 installed.

If you have a Windows 7 recovery partition, you could use that to reinstall Windows 7. If you download a Windows 10 installation image, you could use that to reinstall Windows 10.

No; you could install Windows 10 and the activation process should complete automatically if you are using the same hardware as when you initially upgraded from Win 7 to 10. Or you could use Windows 7, or a different operating system entirely.
