Paving Quote

Would you consider £6,500 a reasonable amount to pay to have 70 paving slabs replaced in front of the building where I live? They recently carried out works to replace the cracked/broken slabs on the pathway that runs along the front of our flats. There were two men and on and off it took a couple of weeks (they were not there all the time). Looking at the accounts for the year and it just seems rather excessive for a relatively simple job but I have no idea how much something like this would normally cost.

To give an insight, the paving slabs I purchased last summer were made for me as as a special order- they were going to be expensive and I knew this before placing the order. (It was my requirement on colour, finish and size) . These were delivered from the factory around fifty miles away to a depot then transferred on a separate load to my location. 70 of these were one particular type - each varied at around £3 per slab.

Hope this gives an insight into your costings.
  • Thanks, I was meaning the cost of labour plus materials. I would have estimated a job like this would be around £2500 to £3000

I realise you meant materials and labour but nobody but you knows what preparation is required. Is there digging out? is a skip required? is stone and sand needed from a builders merchant? how accessible is the work?...you get the idea. Hence I cannot give you a price.

What I can add is I prepared for the slabs and then asked a groundworker if he would lay them - sand bedding and levelling was required. I was supplying this. I was hoping to get the slabs laid for £120-250. The chap wanted £5 per slab laid. I felt this was too high but it acts as a guide.

So, as a simple guide based on this, your work would cost £560. Add what you wish for profits and anything else, but bear in mind the groundworker would have laid the slabs in a very short time!
