Second Hand Car Value

Options
A question for experienced car buyers please.
I got my car valued through webuyanycar.com; and also put the registration in for a car I was planning on buying from a local garage.
The price I was offered for my car matched the valuation of webuyanycar.com exactly.
However the price they wanted to sell me the BMW was far higher than what webuyanycar.com valued it at.
I appreciate its a car showroom and they are have to make money but what is a reasonable percentage to sell over the webuyanycar.com valuation?
Thanks

    As much as somebody'll pay.
  • Thanks Adrian, and sorry my question wasn't clear.
Webuyanycar.com value the car I'm interested in at a BMW garage at £4900 but they are selling it for £8000. That seems high?
  • You think they should be the same???

How do you think garages make money?
    .....

  • So is that a reasonable mark up? That's what I'm wondering

To value the bmw for buying purposes I would look what similar ones are selling for with other garages make sure you compare like for like, with spec extras etc.

A second hand bmw from a garage I would expect a few thousand between trade in value and forecourt price, the garage need to make a profit, pay overheads on premises etc, vat, prepare the car for sale, basically offer a warranty with sale of goods act, offer part ex facilities.

You need to decide if the bmw is good value from other cars for sale basically.

Have a look what cap and glass value the bmw at.
  • Treat the WBAC price with caution, they always offer the lowest price they think they can get away with and then try to knock it down further when you present the car for their inspection.

Look on Autotrader for similar BMWs to get an idea if the price is expensive or not, compare it to other dealers and not private sellers as the dealers charge a premium for their services.

Yes, but the chances are you're only getting rid of your car because you know the head gasket is on the way out, and have been told to spend £1,000 on it to get it through the next service and MoT. It'll have a couple of dings from Tesco and that scuff from when you parked a little too close to the car in front.

Conversely, the garage will be selling the car having had a service and a full 'detailing'. Not only that, it'll come with a warranty and even if it doesn't, the dealer is still effectively liable to fix anything that comes up over the next six months.

On top of that, there will be a profit element, plus some haggling room.

Based on your figures just under 65%

Have a look at others to see if it is competive or overpriced, they need to have similar specification and mileage though.
